Ephemera of the art deco art period inspired the design and effectively communicated the elevated sophistication of the tenth annual event. The poster, designed by Kathy Mueller, showcased the unique properties of the art deco style, capturing the essence of the event and enticing guests to attend.
The poster, created using silkscreened white ink and metallic copper foil on French Pop-Tone Pink Lemonade paper, measured 280 mm x 430 mm. Its striking design and meticulous craftsmanship made it stand out among other promotional materials.
Through visual research at the local university library, Mueller delved into the art deco style, drawing inspiration from the International Deco series of inspirational reference books by Louise Fili and Steven Heller. These books provided a wealth of examples from various countries, showcasing the elegant geometry and harmonious marriage of typography and illustration that define the art deco style.
The challenge for Mueller was to position the event as a fun way to spend an evening while also emphasizing its charitable purpose. By incorporating the art deco style, the designer effectively set expectations for the guests, elevating the sophistication of the event and highlighting its importance.
The poster not only promoted the event but also served as a commemorative piece, reminding attendees of their contribution to the cause. Its unique design and attention to detail made it a coveted item among supporters of Cocktails Against Cancer.
Designed and printed in Philadelphia, the posters were created in preparation for the September 2017 event. The combination of the art deco style and the high-quality production process ensured that the posters captured the essence of the event and left a lasting impression on attendees.
Kathy Mueller's 10th Anniversary Commemorative Poster for Cocktails Against Cancer received the Bronze A' Design Award in 2018.
