Orchid: A Stunning Thai Spa with a Celestial Twist

Unveiling the Mysteries of the Universe in a Relaxing Oasis

Orchid is not your typical Thai spa. Instead of incorporating traditional Thai elements, the designer took a fresh approach, infusing the space with the wonders of nature, the universe, and the starry sky. The result is a captivating environment that allows customers to embark on a journey through the Milky Way.

To achieve this celestial atmosphere, the designer employed reflective materials throughout the space, extending the reach of the lights infinitely while ensuring the safety of visitors' eyes. The optical fiber installed on the ceiling creates a soft and deep starry sky effect, providing a soothing and enchanting ambiance.

The realization of this design involved the use of optical fiber technology. Transparent glass fibers, with a diameter as small as 1-100μm, were strategically placed on the ceiling to mimic the appearance of a starry sky. The light source is transmitted through the optical fibers, creating a sparkling effect that adds charm and depth to the space.

For this project, optical fibers with a length of 180mm and a diameter of 100μm were utilized. The resulting visual effect is reminiscent of a vast universe, with the lights resembling shimmering starlight. The combination of modern technology and artistic sensibility elevates the spa experience to new heights.

Orchid offers more than just a visually stunning environment. The design team has also incorporated interactive elements, allowing visitors to customize the lighting experience. By changing the colors of the stars, the spa can evoke different seasonal moods, providing a truly immersive and dynamic experience for customers.

The Orchid project began in July 2017 and was completed in September of the same year in Nanjing. The design team faced challenges in controlling the reflection of the starry roof and the environment glass, but through experimentation and adjustments, they were able to achieve the desired effect. The use of cost-effective materials further enhanced the scale and impact of the space.

Orchid has garnered recognition for its innovative design. In 2018, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious accolade is a testament to the project's outstanding creativity and resourcefulness, as well as its contribution to improving the quality of life for visitors.
