Adda: A Unique Terrace Restaurant for Gatherings and Hangouts

A Refreshing Space for Highway Travelers to Relax and Enjoy

The inspiration for Adda came from the idea of creating a space where conversations flow, debates are encouraged, and food and drink are always a part of the celebration. The site, a terrace with a small built-up area, is surrounded by farm fields, providing beautiful views for the guests. The goal was to design a destination for highway travelers, offering a refreshing and earthen atmosphere.

To achieve this, Adda incorporates vernacular materials that have an earthen feel, creating a harmonious connection with nature. The roof is constructed using burnt clay tiles embedded with glass, allowing for a unique play of light and shadow throughout the day. The flooring is a combination of tiles, red oxide, and Indian white and black marbles. The entire terrace is filled with plants, further enhancing the natural feel of the space.

Spread over an area of 1500 sq.mt., Adda can accommodate up to 200 guests. The entry to the restaurant is through a dedicated foyer area on the ground floor, leading to a staircase that takes guests to the second-floor terrace. Upon arrival, guests are greeted with three distinct spaces - the front terrace, the central hall, and the rear terrace - each offering its own unique character and seating options.

The design of Adda presented several challenges, particularly in merging the three distinct areas into a cohesive and singular space. The solution was to provide the entry in the middle of the space, creating a seamless flow and making the entire area feel interconnected. Smaller nooks and corners were created within the space to offer intimate seating areas for guests.

Adda, with its unique terrace experience, has become a popular destination for highway travelers looking to take a break from their journeys and enjoy some delicious food and fresh beer. The design has received recognition and was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2018 for its well-designed, practical, and innovative approach.
