Soft Light: A Unique and Personal Residential Design by Jingyi Cai

Creating a Space for Self-Expression and Exploration

Inspired by the multifaceted nature of their client, designer Jingyi Cai has transformed an old house in Guangzhou, China into a private residential building that reflects the client's diverse interests and passions. With a focus on light, comfort, and personal expression, Soft Light is a design that pushes boundaries and creates a truly unique living experience.

The project, spanning an area of approximately 1,300 square meters, began in March 2017 and was completed in January 2018. The client, a young individual with a love for photography and driving, desired a space that would allow for the circulation of light and air. To achieve this, Cai incorporated an abundance of light-colored materials and furniture throughout the design.

One of the standout features of Soft Light is the extensive use of glass, which not only introduces natural light but also creates a bright, comfortable, and energy-efficient space. By replacing the original walls with glass, the entire interior is bathed in natural light, creating a serene and inviting atmosphere. The metal sculpture on the living room ceiling serves as both a source of light and an abstract artwork, adding a touch of sophistication to the space.

The design also includes a private reading room and work area on the second floor, where curved mirrors create an ever-changing play of light and reflections. This adds a dynamic element to the space, enhancing the overall aesthetic and creating an immersive experience for the occupant.

One of the most intriguing aspects of Soft Light is the underground basement, which was intentionally designed as a personal space for the client. In contrast to the shared spaces with the family, this area features a different color scheme and texture, exuding passion and individuality. It serves as a sanctuary where the client can fully express their artistic and adventurous side, free from the constraints of their various roles as a husband, father, and boss.

Throughout the design process, Cai and their team prioritized the relationship between people and space. By carefully selecting materials, manipulating light, and considering functionality and color, they aimed to create an environment that would influence and shape human behavior. The result is a harmonious blend of rationality and sensibility, where every element is thoughtfully curated to enhance the overall living experience.

Soft Light has been recognized for its exceptional design and creativity, receiving the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2018. This prestigious accolade celebrates designs that demonstrate ingenuity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.

With Soft Light, Jingyi Cai has not only created a visually stunning residential design but also a space that reflects the unique personality and interests of the client. Through the skillful use of light, materials, and thoughtful design choices, Soft Light offers a truly immersive and personalized living experience.
