The Pallet was designed with a clear vision: to create a cosmopolitan space for the patrons of Bangalore to experience world cuisine. The design inspiration came from Bangalore's lesser-known status as a southern hub for wooden pallet manufacturing. The idea of recycling these pallets for the world cuisine palate was born, leading to the creation of a unique and sustainable design.
What sets The Pallet apart is its unconventional use of wooden pallets for interior decor. This design philosophy of repetition of a module to generate patterns and textures has resulted in a fresh and appealing space that stays ahead of future design trends. Despite the raw state of the materials used, the restaurant exudes an international look, attracting even expats from the city.
The restaurant, located on the ground level of a commercial complex, covers an indoor space of 1250 square meters with a clear ceiling height of 4.2 meters. The recycled wooden packing pallets act as a wrapping element to the raw structure, with the grey tone of raw concrete finish on walls and floor complementing the raw wood on vertical planes and ceilings. The services are wrapped around by wooden pallets, and the true ceiling is painted black to give a sense of infinity.
The design process involved a significant amount of research and presented several challenges. Recycling used wooden pallets required sorting for finish and quality, and all designs were evolved from a module of a single pallet. The weight of pallets to be suspended from the ceiling needed to be calculated from a structural point of view, and wastage needed to be calculated and reused in designs to achieve zero wastage.
The Pallet is a testament to the innovative and sustainable design philosophy of Ketan Jawdekar. It is a shining example of how design can transform a space, create a unique experience, and contribute to sustainability. The Pallet is not just a restaurant and microbrewery; it is a revolution in hospitality design.
