U Energy: A Trendy and Motivational Boutique Health Club

Creating a Dynamic Space for a Healthy and Energetic Workout

Chosen as one of 'The best gyms around the world for design buffs in 2108' by Wallpaper, U Energy is a unique boutique health club designed by Rabih Geha Architects.

U Energy was born out of a need for respite from the hectic nature of daily life. Designed by Rabih Geha Architects, this trendy and motivational gym space encourages connection and interaction among its members. The gym is completely open, divided only by structural concrete pillars and industrial-style equipment, creating a dynamic and energetic atmosphere.

The underground gym features skylights that allow beams of natural light to filter in from above, creating a bright and inviting space. Neon lighting is strategically placed throughout the gym to aid progression during workouts and add to the trendy ambiance. The linear structures fitted with neon lighting strips run parallel across the space, subtly highlighting personal zones and encouraging a competitive culture among the gym-goers.

U Energy stands out from other health clubs with its raw and honest architecture. The main materials used in the space reflect this bold design approach, with flooring made of special impact rubber and walls and columns constructed with cast-in-place concrete. The cage and bar structure are made of black steel, while the coffee and juice bar top is crafted from Carrara marble. Cabinet and locker panels are made of high-pressure laminate and grooved with number graphics.

Spanning an area of 1200 square meters, U Energy is located in Hazmieh, Lebanon. The project was undertaken by Rabih Geha Architects in May 2016 and delivered in November 2017. The design team, led by Rabih Geha, included Cynthia Safi as the project manager and Maya Kaaki as the interior architect.

One of the design challenges faced by the team was creating an innovative social experience within the gym. The goal was to encourage team culture and create an immersive experience through playful interaction between gym-goers. This was achieved by designing an open space that allows clear visual communication between different areas, even the enclosed area for classes, which features transparent net-like enclosures.

The result is an edgy and dynamic setting that motivates individuals to enhance their well-being without the distractions of the busy city. U Energy provides a comfortable and energetic environment for a healthy workout, making it a standout boutique health club.

U Energy was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2018 in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award recognizes the outstanding and creatively ingenious design of U Energy, which incorporates best practices in art, science, design, and technology. The gym's strong technical and creative skills contribute to quality of life improvements, making it a better place for its members.
