The Light House: A Cultural Center Transforming Star Street Precinct

Creating a Hub for Ideas and Cultural Exchange

The Light House is a unique cultural center designed by Vicky Chan that aims to transform the Star Street Precinct into a vibrant hub for ideas and cultural exchange. With its human-centric design and focus on sustainability, this project adds to the story of the past, present, and future of Star Street, while creating a village for global minds.

The Light House is not just a single building, but a collection of cultural activities that will make Star Street Precinct a destination for the next two decades. It offers a variety of spaces, including event venues for art and music, coworking offices for entrepreneurs, and art studios for movie makers. This diverse range of offerings fills a void in the area, where the abundance of restaurants is not matched by proper cultural spaces.

By curating a wide range of programs, The Light House aims to enhance the quality of life for existing residents while attracting families of all ages who are interested in a vibrant lifestyle in a quiet area. It serves as a platform for the exchange of ideas and the celebration of art, music, and entrepreneurship.

One of the key strengths of The Light House is its commitment to sustainability. The project embraces the reuse of existing buildings, which is the most sustainable practice in terms of lowering carbon footprint. By repurposing and renovating these structures, the project not only preserves the historical character of the area but also reduces construction waste.

On the outside, The Light House incorporates green spaces to provide breakout areas for the public. These spaces not only enhance the aesthetics of the precinct but also help regulate the ambient temperature, creating a more pleasant environment for visitors. Inside the buildings, sustainable features such as high-performance windows, energy-efficient air conditioners, and low-flow fixtures are incorporated to meet environmental goals and elevate the living standards for all families.

The Light House is a testament to the collaborative efforts of a talented design team, including Vicky Chan, Widjene Kaabi, Krystal Lung, Melissa Chan, Albert Ng, Emily Manasc, and Ava Chow. Their expertise and creativity have resulted in a design that seamlessly blends the old and the new, creating a montage of cultural experiences.

Both buildings in The Light House have an orthogonal design, allowing for modular construction. This not only expedites the construction process but also minimizes the impact on the surrounding area. The project is not only feasible but also cost-effective, making it an excellent example of how design can be both innovative and practical.

The Light House project concept started in November 2017, and since then, it has garnered recognition and accolades. In 2018, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category. This prestigious award recognizes designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills while contributing to quality of life improvements.

The Light House is not just a building; it is a beacon of culture, creativity, and sustainability. With its unique design and commitment to community engagement, it has the potential to transform the Star Street Precinct into a global destination for art, music, and entrepreneurship.
