J'adore: A Tranquil and Open-Planned Residence

Creating a Relaxing and Social Space for a Young Couple

The clients, Keller Chen, Howard Huang, and Lara Li, envisioned a home that would cater to their love for gourmet foods, cooking, and socializing with friends. The design of J'adore, a residential space, focused on an open-planning format that promotes comfortable and friendly human interaction. This article explores the unique features and design elements that make J'adore a tranquil and inviting retreat.

Different materials were carefully selected to shape a relaxing environment in J'adore. By removing the original partitioning, the space was transformed into an open kitchen with an island benchtop on elevated timber flooring, seamlessly connected to a cozy sofa area on a lowered floor. The interior is flooded with ample light, enhancing the vibrant greenery and creating a holiday retreat-like atmosphere. The grey L-shape ceiling in the kitchen echoes the grey wall in the living room, visually extending the space and adding a touch of elegance. The lighting in patterned tiles, ceiling, and elevated flooring further enhances the ambiance, transforming the space into a luxurious villa during the day and a cozy lounge in the evening.

The realization of J'adore involved the use of various materials and technologies. Black, grey, and white hexagonal tiles, wooden-textured tiles, Spanish-pattern tiles, genuine timber, composite flooring, special paint, and quartz stone were carefully chosen to bring the design to life. The removal of the original polished quartz tiles made way for wooden-textured tiles, adding depth and tranquility to the extended space. The genuine timber flooring and the grey wall surface extending to the ceiling create a visually striking focal point in the room.

J'adore is a 100 square meter residence located in an apartment building with elevators. The removal of partitioning walls and the decorative tapering of the main beam were done to alleviate the visual oppressiveness and create a sense of spaciousness. The open-plan design allows the living room to encompass the dining and kitchen areas, promoting a harmonious and synergetic flow. The horse-shoe sofa layout in the living room encourages social interaction and adds versatility to the space.

The design of J'adore successfully addresses the challenges posed by limited space and the need for human interaction. By removing the original partitioning and opening up the kitchen, the living room, dining area, and kitchen seamlessly merge, creating a more expansive and inviting space. The concealed beams and columns within the tapered ceiling further enhance the sense of openness and minimize the presence of boundaries.

J'adore was completed in February 2018 in Hsinchu City. The design was based on extensive research and a deep understanding of the clients' needs. The removal of partitioning and the integration of windows allowed for ample natural light to flood the interior, creating a bright and visually enlarged space. The design team's dedication to creating a space that reflects the owners' lifestyle and preferences is evident in every detail of J'adore.

J'adore was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2019. This prestigious award recognizes designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life. J'adore stands as a testament to the fusion of art, science, design, and technology, creating a space that truly makes the world a better place.
