Memory of Water is a glass ring that captures the essence of water in a split second. The design is inspired by the natural form of water and its appearance under stroboscopic effect. The fluid, one-of-a-kind shape of the ring reflects the delicate and feminine qualities of glass, creating an elegant wearable piece of art.
Made from hand-pulled canes of molten borosilicate glass, each ring is meticulously formed around a heated mandrel. The sharp edges and excess material are then carefully worked on through cold work and lamp work post-processing. To ensure the stability of the glass, the rings are annealed by gradually cooling them after being brought up to temperature.
Measuring less than 1" x 1" x 1", each Memory of Water ring is a testament to the designer's skill and creativity. It represents a departure from traditional jewelry materials and techniques, offering a fresh perspective on the concept of preciousness.
Lucy Yip, the designer behind Memory of Water, embarked on this project in 2015 as an interdisciplinary student endeavor at the Rhode Island School of Design. With a background in industrial design and fine art, Yip had no prior experience working with glass or jewelry. However, through dedication and a winter-session class focused on glass, she was able to overcome the challenges and bring her vision to life.
Memory of Water has been recognized for its ingenuity and creativity, receiving the Bronze A' Design Award in the Jewelry, Eyewear, and Watch Design category in 2019. This prestigious award honors designs that showcase technical and creative excellence, contributing to improvements in quality of life and making the world a better place.
Memory of Water is not just a ring; it is a work of art that challenges conventions and invites us to rethink the concept of value. With its fluid form and translucent qualities, it captures the essence of water and showcases the beauty of glass in a unique and captivating way.
