FLOAT.: Innovative Packaging for Soap

Creating Artistic Soap for Millennials

FLOAT. is a brand that designs stylish soap packaging to create meaning and an experience for millennials, transferring qualities through aesthetics to inspire wellness.

Inspired by the simple soap bubble and guided by the concept of 'Life Imitates Art', FLOAT. aims to make artistic soap that uplifts both consumers and their homes. Bath time is a relaxing break in the middle of the day for many people, and this effect can be enhanced by an aesthetically pleasing soap. As non-art aspects of people's lives imitate art, a positive affect can be introduced through a visually pleasing everyday item, which in turn improves consumers' attitude and way of living.

The motivation behind FLOAT. is to create packaging for soap that appeals to millennials and minimizes paper wastage. Instead of having information on several collaterals, all the necessary details are contained within the paper used for the packaging. The visual language of the packaging is guided by the principle of having the audience see these soaps as art. Inspired by the colors, form, and vibrancy of bubbles, these qualities are translated into paint-like graphic forms that manifest into abstract works of art.

FLOAT.'s packaging is made using a single sheet of paper with only folds to create a box for the soaps. Instructions and information are printed on the inside of the packaging, allowing customers to readily read them after opening and reducing wastage. The die-cut is repurposed into a card with discount information, which customers can choose to use or pass on to others.

The challenge in creating FLOAT.'s packaging was to showcase the product, allow for ease of mass production, and use a single, rectangular sheet of paper instead of falling back on the usual box templates. Through research on existing packaging and the latest trends in soap packaging, FLOAT. was able to overcome these challenges and create a unique and innovative design.

The design team behind FLOAT., led by Wang Min, started this self-initiated project in August 2016 and finished it in December 2016 in Singapore. The project received the Bronze A' Design Award in 2019, which recognizes outstanding and creatively ingenious designs that authenticate experience and resourcefulness. The award acknowledges FLOAT.'s strong technical and creative skills, as well as its contribution to improving the quality of life.

With its innovative approach to soap packaging, FLOAT. not only provides a functional and visually pleasing product but also aims to inspire wellness and elevate the everyday bathing experience for millennials.
