Shell Sofa: A Fusion of Nature and Technology

Natalia Komarova's Award-Winning Design Inspired by Sea Shells and Exoskeleton Technology

Introducing the Shell Sofa, a unique furniture piece by Natalia Komarova, inspired by the natural forms of sea shells and the innovative exoskeleton technology. This airy, optical illusion-inducing design is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.

The Shell Sofa's design stands out due to its unique combination of lightness and strength. The lightness is achieved through the use of a web of nylon ropes, while the strength is provided by a lightweight metal structure. The silhouette lines' softness balances the carcass's hardness, creating a harmonious blend of different shapes and textures.

The sofa's shape is set by the metal structure, and the internal arcs' angle is designed for seating comfort. The composition of the sofa is completed with soft overhead seats and cushions. The rigid base under the corner sections of the seat doubles as side tables, adding functionality to the design.

The Shell Sofa is produced using lightweight metal rods attached to guides. The depth and volume are created by tightening the arcs with nylon ropes. Natural fabrics are used for the upholstery of the seats, adding an element of luxury to the design.

The design of the Shell Sofa was developed in May 2018, with production planned for early 2019. The design process was influenced by fashion trends in imitating exoskeleton technology and 3D printing. Despite the challenges of combining numerous elements of different shapes and textures, the sofa maintains an airy look, thanks to its huge metal frame.

The Shell Sofa was awarded Silver in the A' Furniture Design Award in 2019. This prestigious award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. The Shell Sofa, admired for its strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcases a remarkable level of excellence and introduces positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
