Curve Glass: Redefining the Drinking Experience

A Minimalist Solution to Everyday Problems

Even though we're used to it, drinking or stirring a beverage with a straw requires constant awareness of the direction in which the straw is pointed. Drinking through a straw could also require both hands, which is needless. Another existing problem with glasses is drying them properly. Curve Glass is an exploration of function conceptualized with the idea to solve multiple problems with a minimal intervention, which led to unexpected results.

Curve Glass, designed by Vladimir Zagorac, is a revolutionary drinking glass that challenges traditional norms and enhances the user experience. With its unique features and thoughtful design, Curve Glass offers a solution to common issues faced while enjoying a beverage.

A defining feature of Curve Glass is the slight curved recess on the edge, which helps the straw to be kept securely in the right direction once the glass is tilted, without the need for both hands. This indentation also aids in stirring the drink, allowing the straw to fall in place on its own. Additionally, when the glass is washed and placed upside down on a flat surface to dry, this recess allows the leftover water to evaporate, preventing unpleasant odors and the formation of mildew inside the glass.

The realization of Curve Glass involves glass blowing inside a mold, with the recess on the edge created using a laser before the final finishing and reheating process. The technical specifications of Curve Glass include a height of 140mm, diameter of 69mm, and a volume of 330ml.

Curve Glass offers a unique interaction with the user. Instinctively held with the recess turned towards the user, the glass ensures that the straw is always positioned correctly by gravity when tilted. The recess is minimal, preventing any spillage while drinking. Without a straw, the user experiences a different and pleasant sensation when their lips touch the recess. To drink in the traditional way, the recess can be turned away. After washing, turning the Curve Glass upside down allows it to stay hygienic and dry efficiently.

The design of Curve Glass encourages creativity and versatility. The introduction of the curved recess created a product that can be used for more purposes than initially expected. It opens up possibilities for placing a long spoon, a piece of fruit, or garnish securely when preparing beverages and cocktails. Additionally, an empty Curve Glass can be used to discourage smoking subtly, as the recess does not fit a cigarette.

Curve Glass was conceptualized to give the user more options when preparing and more freedom when enjoying a beverage. The challenge was to enrich the function of an everyday object with a simple intervention in form, changing unnecessary habits we are accustomed to, and improving the overall experience. The form of Curve Glass remains within minimalism, inviting users with its elegant silhouette and radiating sensuality.

Curve Glass, designed by Vladimir Zagorac, is a testament to innovation and creativity in the world of drinkware design. Its unique features and thoughtful design have earned it the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in 2019. This award recognizes outstanding and creatively ingenious designs that authenticate experience and resourcefulness, contributing to quality of life improvements. Curve Glass truly makes the world a better place by enhancing the drinking experience and allowing users to explore their own creativity.
