Ambi Chopsticks & Holders: A Sustainable and Stylish Utensil

Reimagining Chopsticks with Oscar de la Hera Gomez

On a warm summer night in London, Oscar de la Hera Gomez was inspired by a Japanese toothpick that embodied the values of minimalism, hygiene, and sustainability. This inspiration led him to create the Ambi Chopsticks & Holders, a unique and eco-friendly utensil.

The Ambi Chopsticks & Holders, designed by Oscar de la Hera Gomez, is a set of chopsticks that resemble the twigs of a tree. Each set comes with a silicone leaf that serves multiple purposes. It helps individuals identify their own set, holds the chopsticks together, and doubles as a rest, allowing for uninterrupted conversation during meals.

What sets the Ambi Chopsticks & Holders apart is its commitment to sustainability. With 80 billion disposable chopsticks discarded every year, the Ambi Chopsticks & Holders aims to reduce waste and promote reusability. In line with this mission, 50% of all royalties from the product are donated to a reforestation cause.

The realization of the Ambi Chopsticks & Holders involved a combination of technology and craftsmanship. The design was prototyped using Solidworks and 3D printed in ABS. The final product was mass-produced in China using Wenge Wood and Silicone, resulting in a durable and visually appealing utensil.

Measuring 5 inches in height, 2 inches in width, and 1.5 inches in depth, the Ambi Chopsticks & Holders are designed to be ergonomic and comfortable to use.

During the design process, Oscar de la Hera Gomez conducted extensive research and interviews to understand the needs and preferences of chopstick users. Insights from users revealed the importance of a secure grip, the need for easy identification of personal sets, and the desire for a hygienic dining experience. The Ambi Chopsticks & Holders address these concerns by providing a comfortable grip, a distinctive silicone leaf for identification, and a rest that keeps the chopsticks elevated and clean.

The Ambi Chopsticks & Holders were exhibited at the MoMA Store in New York in April 2018, showcasing their unique design and commitment to sustainability. The product received the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in 2019, recognizing its practicality, innovation, and contribution to a better world.

With the Ambi Chopsticks & Holders, Oscar de la Hera Gomez has not only created a functional and stylish utensil but also made a significant impact in promoting sustainability and reforestation. By choosing Ambi Chopsticks & Holders, individuals can enjoy their meals while contributing to a greener future.
