Reviving the Ancient in Modernity: The C Future City Experience Center

CCD's Unique Design Approach Transforms an Old Fishing Village into a Modern Experience Center

CCD - Cheng Chung Design, a renowned design firm, has breathed new life into an ancient coastal fishing village in Shenzhen, China, transforming it into the C Future City Experience Center. This award-winning project is a testament to the firm's ability to blend tradition with innovation, creating a space that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

The inspiration for the design came from the unique history of Zhongzhou Shangsha, a place that was once a humble fishing village and has now become a part of the bustling city of Shenzhen. The designers at CCD used the "marks from the fishing village" as a starting point for their design, aiming to create a city-in-village that reflects the city's new life and its emergence from along the Zhongzhou Bay.

What sets the C Future City Experience Center apart from other designs is its multi-purpose functionality. Initially serving as a sales office, the space will later be used as residential commercial facilities. The design is intended to be a refined space where young people in Shenzhen can explore, appreciate, and enjoy.

The realization of this design was achieved through the incorporation of natural elements into the architectural structure. Green plants were inserted into connecting corridors, and circular holes were created to outline trees, making them a precious piece of nature among the artificial structures. The addition of pine, bamboo, stone, and water pools increased the vitality and interest of the three-story experience space, reflecting the oriental meaning of the entire design and the ownership of the area.

The Experience Center is decorated with distinctive art installations, such as the wooden architecture inside the promenade and a combination of spherical articles in various transitional belts. The main materials used in this project are sandstone, granite, ash wood, and stone, chosen to prolong the natural style of the fishing village. This idea is also reflected in the selection of major works of art, such as the ship-shaped solid wood tables, the wavy white beading device in the shape of a fishing net, and a dry landscape formed by moss balls, rocks, and gray pebbles.

The design process was not without its challenges. The layout planning of a large-scale Experience Center posed a significant challenge. However, the team at CCD, led by Joe Cheng and Ken Hu, managed to overcome this hurdle, creating a space that is not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing. The project was completed in April 2018 in Shenzhen.

The C Future City Experience Center has been recognized for its unique design approach, winning the Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2019. This award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom. They are venerated products and bright ideas that advance art, science, design, and technology, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
