The Cross Buckle, a product of the Fabrik Design Team's creativity and innovation, was inspired by the team's focus on the severe shortage of artisans and handicrafts in Japan. The team sought to create a product that could be easily assembled and stored in a small space, a common challenge for small studios in Tokyo. The development of this general-purpose metal fitting was the crux of the project. Its simple shape flexibly solves various problems, demonstrating the team's commitment to finding practical solutions.
What sets the Cross Buckle apart is its primitive design that traces the function of a buckle that holds a belt. It can accommodate two width bands through its long and short sides, making it a versatile accessory. The buckle, combined with cut leather, can create high-quality products without the need for special machines. This feature not only adds originality but also brings a sense of unity to the design.
The realization of the Cross Buckle involved a meticulous process. The team used 3D printing to study the size variation of the prototype, designed using 3DCAD. Based on the data gathered, craftsmen from Niigata created a silver master model. Mass production was achieved using a rubber mold, which allowed for the casting of the undercut shape and the completion of a previously non-existent part. The buckle was then used to assemble belts and bags, with leather parts precisely designed with one large pattern.
The Cross Buckle is not just a product of innovative design, but also a testament to the Fabrik Design Team's perseverance. The team faced numerous challenges, including negotiating with over 30 state-of-the-art vendors in Japan for the mass production of the buckle. The undercut shape posed a significant challenge, making it difficult to mold with current industrial technology. However, the team overcame these barriers by negotiating with factories in the field of crafts and jewelry, demonstrating their commitment to realizing their vision.
The Cross Buckle project, which was launched in July 2017 and completed in May 2018, has received significant recognition. It was awarded Silver in the A' Fashion and Travel Accessories Design Award in 2019, a testament to its outstanding design and innovation. This award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation. The Cross Buckle, with its unique design and purpose, certainly fits this description.
In conclusion, the Cross Buckle by the Fabrik Design Team is a remarkable solution to a pressing issue. It not only addresses the decline of the artisan industry in Japan but also introduces a new approach to craftsmanship. It is a testament to the power of design and innovation, proving that even the simplest of items can make a significant impact.
