Tim Olbrich, the creative mind behind Between The Shores, was inspired by the escalating global refugee crisis. He sought to challenge the negative perceptions of refugees in wealthier countries and to highlight the human rights abuses that force people to flee their homes. The result is a brochure that not only informs but also humanizes the refugee experience.
What sets Between The Shores apart is its unique blend of infographics and storytelling. The brochure tells the story of a Syrian girl's journey while presenting hard facts and statistics about the refugee crisis. The design is kept simple and accessible, making it suitable for a wide range of audiences, including parents, children, teachers, and students.
The brochure was created using Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, and Microsoft Excel. It measures 380mm x 380mm and consists of 14 pages, including a 4-page cover. The design process took place from March to June 2018 in Savannah, GA, USA.
Olbrich's research for the project was extensive. He relied on data from the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) to answer key questions about the origins and destinations of refugees, public perceptions of refugees, and the experiences of refugees. Interpreting and visualizing this data in a meaningful and impactful way was a significant challenge, but one that Olbrich successfully overcame.
Between The Shores is more than just a brochure; it's a conversation starter. It provides enough information for readers to form an opinion on the refugee crisis and encourages them to discuss it with their peers. The ultimate goal is not to provide a solution, but to raise awareness and stimulate dialogue.
In recognition of its creativity, technical excellence, and social relevance, Between The Shores was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in 2019. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill. It's a testament to Olbrich's talent and his commitment to shedding light on the global refugee crisis.
