Interactive Courtyard Housing

Residential Buildings

Nowadays, with the rapid development of urbanization, cities in China become unprecedented crowded and busy. People in metropolis of China, or we often call them jokingly as social slaves, are always in a sustainable tension. They’re choked up with pressure from work, housing pricing, society relationship and so on, which results in their yearning for rushing out of cities and discover a relaxing place for decompression. That's the reason why we make this design.

60 sq.m and 80 sq.m housing compose standard modular boxes in this project: apart from tiny indoor layout, all of housing type can be categorized as the two standard modular boxes. These boxes are piled together like LEGO to three different kinds of receding 3-stories buildings. Under such operation, a private courtyard is placed into every housing box in our design. Residents will enter their home through a small garden belong to themselves, which enable them have privilege possessing exclusive outdoor space gifted by nature.

We use the coarse white painting in the facade to corporate with the surrounding rural area. Besides, wood is used in specific area to provide striking key points to the whole cluster.

Dwelling units will be in two types: 60 sq.m and 80 sq.m. The total building area will be 30,000 sq.m. Dwelling units have their own private yards while they share public yards to communicate with each other when combined as dwelling buildings and blocks.

The project Interactive Courtyard Housing is a typical type of house representing our exploration for ways to solve this social problem. As a vacation apartment located in Longhua, Hebei province, near Beijing, the project aims to provide an affordable holiday space immersed in nature for Beijingers, so that they have a rest after days of work.

The project started in March 2018 and finished in July 2018 in Hangzhou, China, and is under construction in Longhua, China now.

The Great Wall is always one of the most important cultural elements in China. The conceptual factors extracted from the Great Wall, like the beacon tower, the yellow rock in mountain, are selectively applied in this project. When residents spend vacation here, not only pleasant repose, but also recognition of cultural identity can be achieved simultaneously.

More of amalgamated dwelling, the project is similar to a miniature version of a villa. Due to the fact that Chinese housing pricing is in high cost now, people usually are not willing to, and not able to purchase vacation apartments of relatively larger area. So in this project, we design basic housing types of 60 sq.m and 80 sq.m for choosing, which is an affordable price for people in Beijing, and comfortable space for a family to live in.

Project aims to create effective shared space for residents here. Piled with standard modular box, the housing can be seen as a conceptual symbol of the Great Wall surrounding site, providing a sense of locality. Residents enter home via private courtyard: the exclusive outdoor space. Meanwhile, public yards in the community stimulate people stepping outside, encouraging communication. The project provides affordable holiday space: 60 sq.m or 80 sq.m apartments for people in the city to relax.
