The Bund: A Modern Classic Infused with Local Culture

Shanghai Huazhe Bund Real Estate Co.,Ltd Revives Art Deco in a Contemporary Residential Project

Shanghai Huazhe Bund Real Estate Co.,Ltd has designed an innovative residential project, The Bund, that seamlessly integrates modern architecture with classic Art Deco elements. The design draws inspiration from local cultural landmarks and is a testament to the city's golden age.

The project's design is a tribute to Shanghai's architectural heritage, incorporating horizontal lines, curved corners, and Art Deco elements from iconic buildings such as the Wukang Mansion. The use of chamfered corners in the details of tower buildings, podiums, corridors, door heads, and enclosure walls, along with the combination of curved glass and exquisite lines on the facades, results in a subtle fusion of classic style and modern form.

The Bund stands out for its attention to detail and its response to the local cultural context. Parts of existing buildings on the site, such as special lintels and brick walls, are integrated with modern materials to create a 'garden of memories'. This unique approach to design ensures that the project is not just another residential building, but a living, breathing part of the city's history and culture.

The design team employed the three-section composition of classical Chinese architecture and emphasized horizontal lines in the facade design. The logic of lines, extracted from classical column forms and based on precise mathematics, is applied to the architectural design of the project. The form of facades is controlled through the skirtings, and the proportions of the facades are controlled through modulus and grids, resulting in a unified design language for the structures.

With a gross floor area of 78,917 square meters, The Bund is a large-scale project that has been meticulously planned and executed. The design team took into account the association between the new residential buildings and the cultural context of the old neighborhood, arranging the buildings in a relatively scattered way to generate a sense of openness along the street and reduce the oppressive feeling brought by high-rise apartments with high density.

The project was realized over a period of six years, from 2019 to 2025, in Shanghai, China. The design team faced several challenges, including the adoption of double-curved-surface small skirtings for the facades and the innovative application of modern materials and classical Chinese aesthetics in the landscape design. Despite these challenges, the team managed to create a project that is both aesthetically pleasing and functional, providing a healing environment for residents in the post-pandemic era.

The Bund's unique design and innovative approach to integrating the old with the new have earned it the prestigious Silver A' Construction and Real Estate Projects Design Award in 2023. This award is a testament to the project's outstanding expertise and innovation, and its ability to introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
