Kafe: A Coffee Maker Designed for Ritual and Contemplation

Creating a Moment of Peace in the Daily Routine

During an ergonomics course, Alicia Rühr, the designer behind Kafe, saw the potential in creating a coffee maker that not only focused on its ergonomic design but also provided a moment of contemplation and peace in our daily lives. By intensifying the process of brewing coffee, Kafe establishes itself as a ritual that allows us to be aware of our surroundings and ourselves.

Waking up in the morning and going through our automated routines can often leave us feeling like mere functionaries. Our coffee machines become indispensable tools for waking up both our bodies and souls. In this context, Kafe stands out by creating space for us to finally be aware of our surroundings and ourselves. It transforms the regulated and balanced procedure of brewing coffee into a symbiosis of efficiency and peace, providing a moment of respite in our busy lives.

Kafe's unique design allows for a fluid and relaxed movement. The French press is lifted with one hand on its loop, and the spout hooks into the rim of the mug, pulling it along. This balanced procedure becomes a memorized course of motions, creating a sense of tranquility and mindfulness.

Although Kafe was initially created as a prototype to visualize the concept, its approximate dimensions of 125mm in height, 175mm in width, and 95mm in depth demonstrate its compact and ergonomic design. The use of aluminum in the prototype emphasizes its intention as a concept rather than a production-ready model.

Designed as part of an ergonomics course at a university in Munich, Kafe was the result of extensive research and creative problem-solving. Alicia Rühr aimed to reduce distress on the wrist and hand while pouring liquid, and through brainstorming alternative hand postures, she discovered that the most effortless movement also created a ritual-like procedure.

Overcoming the challenges of creating an ergonomic product with a visually appealing design, Rühr found optimization through a philosophical approach rather than relying solely on numbers and facts. By modeling and calculating proportions using Rhino 3D, she created a blueprint that ensured the predefined handling of Kafe with the highest accuracy.

Kafe's unique design and thoughtful approach to the ritual of brewing coffee have garnered recognition in the design community. In 2019, it was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Bakeware, Tableware, Drinkware, and Cookware Design category. This prestigious award recognizes well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements, providing fulfillment and positive feelings while contributing to a better world.

With Kafe, Alicia Rühr has created a coffee maker that goes beyond functionality and elevates the act of brewing coffee into a moment of peace and contemplation. Its ergonomic design, balanced procedure, and emphasis on mindfulness make it a unique addition to any coffee lover's routine.
