YM Nursery: A Design that Connects Children with Nature

Creating a Sensory Experience for Children

YM Nursery, designed by Hibinosekkei and Youji No Shiro, is a unique and innovative space that aims to connect children with nature. Located in Yonago, Tottori, Japan, this nursery is surrounded by a rich natural environment, with mountains on one side and a beautiful beach on the other. However, the previous nursery design failed to bring the essence of nature inside the classroom. To address this, the designers developed the concept of "Feel nature, grow sensitivity," focusing on materials that would allow children to experience nature in their daily lives.

The design of YM Nursery sets it apart from other nurseries in its commitment to creating a sensory experience for children. The use of various natural materials throughout the space allows children to engage with their surroundings and develop their sensitivity. Each material is carefully chosen to provide a unique texture and tell a story, reflecting the local environment and the history of the nursery.

One of the key strengths of YM Nursery is its integration of local materials. The floor, exterior gabion, wall, floor sign, and class sign are all made from materials sourced locally. This not only helps children learn about their immediate surroundings but also fosters a sense of connection to the community. Additionally, some materials, such as rocks in the exterior gabion and wooden floor and wall, are reused from old buildings, teaching children the value of sustainability and caring for their environment.

The realization of YM Nursery involved the use of specific technologies and techniques. The designers focused on using natural materials with appealing textures and smells that are beneficial for children's sensory and brain development. Furthermore, the design incorporates elements that encourage physical activity, such as a corridor with a 100-meter track marked by metal signs on the floor. This promotes exercise and active play among the children.

The unique design of the toilet space in YM Nursery deserves special mention. The partitions of the toilets are made of stainless steel, resembling mirrors. This design was inspired by the traditional pottery in the area, known as Kugogama, and serves as an opportunity for children to learn about the local culture. By creating an enjoyable, bright, and clean toilet space, the negative associations typically associated with toilets are eliminated, making it a place where children feel comfortable and engaged.

Completed in May 2018, YM Nursery stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful design in early childhood education. By immersing children in a rich sensory environment and connecting them with nature, this nursery promotes their growth and development in a holistic manner.

YM Nursery was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2019 in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category. This recognition highlights the nursery's well-designed, practical, and innovative approach, meeting professional and industrial requirements while contributing to a better world.
