Blending Tradition and Modernity in a Sustainable Design

The inspiration for the Xixi Endless Garden comes from the traditional structure of pavilions and corridors, which are widely seen in Chinese architecture. By adopting this design approach, the entire construction becomes a pavilion in the wetland, connected by corridors that showcase the charm of China's tradition. The box-like structure with no pillars in the middle adds a sense of modernity to the construction, successfully combining both traditional and contemporary forms. The choice of white walls and gray windows pays homage to the southern characteristics, creating a harmonious blend of old and new.

What sets the Xixi Endless Garden apart is its commitment to the concept of nothingness. This design philosophy aims to create a natural and smooth environment that seamlessly integrates with the surrounding landscape. The general planning and landscape design of the project prioritize a return to nature and ancient forms, emphasizing harmony, peace, silence, and quiescence - qualities deeply rooted in Chinese culture. Through careful planning, construction, and landscape design, the Xixi Endless Garden aims to restore traditional Chinese views on neighborhood, life, ideals, and mindset.

The realization of the Xixi Endless Garden involved extensive discussions and considerations to protect the wetland in an ecological manner. The project team adopted a strategy of respecting the wetland with minimal intervention, preserving its original forms and native landscapes. This approach included strict control over the size of constructions and roads, utilizing the existing road system, and prioritizing pedestrian-friendly pathways complemented by a few electric vehicles.

With an occupied area of 710,000 square meters and a construction area of 5,642 square meters, the Xixi Endless Garden provides ample space for various activities and functions. Its unique design allows for different experiences in each season. From watching snowfall in the warm pavilion during winter to enjoying the beauty of raindrops from the comfort of the rooms during rainy days, the Xixi Endless Garden offers a dynamic and ever-changing environment. The pavilion and corridor spaces adapt to the shifting daylight and night, creating a captivating atmosphere throughout the day.

The Xixi Endless Garden was designed and completed between 2008 and 2016 in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China. Its location in the Xixi Wetland, known for its cultural elegance and unique southern landscape, inspired the design team to embrace the concept of nothingness. By carefully considering the size of the construction, its integration with nature, and the preservation of the original ecology, the Xixi Endless Garden represents the essence of Hangzhou's cultural heritage and natural beauty.

The Xixi Endless Garden has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category in 2022.
