Chu's fascination with Suminagashi led to the creation of the Balance collection. The technique involves floating color inks on the surface of water, resulting in mesmerizing circular rings and patterns. Chu was captivated by the marbled patterns and washed-out effects on paper, which served as the inspiration for her jewelry designs.
What sets the Balance collection apart is the use of paper-thin porcelain and plique a jour enamel as the precious stones. Each stone is individually prong-set, creating intricate swirling patterns and circular rings that symbolize cycles and the constant impact of one object upon another. The translucent nature of the materials allows light to pass through, emphasizing the contrast and adding a touch of modernity to the design.
One unique feature of the Balance necklaces is the incorporation of LED lights. Chu has affixed a LED switch on the back of the pendant, allowing wearers to turn the light on or off as desired. When the LED light is on, the necklace performs even better in a dark room, creating a mesmerizing glow that enhances the overall aesthetic.
The Balance collection is a testament to Chu's creativity and craftsmanship. The necklaces are meticulously handcrafted using sterling silver, porcelain, steel cable wire, Arduino, Gemma, Neopixel LED Ring, battery, and diffuser plastic. The attention to detail and the combination of traditional and modern materials make these pieces truly unique.
The Balance necklaces come in three different sizes: Balance I (4''x 15''x 2.5''), Balance II (3''x 15''x 2.5''), and Balance III (3''x 15''x 2.5''). Each necklace is a wearable work of art that combines elegance, innovation, and symbolism.
The Balance collection was created by Hsinyu Chu in San Francisco, starting in December 2016 and finishing in May 2017. It was later exhibited at Artistar in February 2018, where it garnered attention and accolades.
Chu's designs are influenced by Chinese philosophy, particularly the concept of Yin Yang, which symbolizes the interconnectedness and interdependence of opposite or contrary forces. This concept, rooted in Chu's exposure to her father's work as a Feng Shui consultant in Taiwan, adds depth and meaning to the Balance collection.
Chu faced various creative, technical, and research challenges while bringing the Balance collection to life. Exploring different materials and technologies was a crucial part of the design process, resulting in the unique combination of porcelain, enamel, and LED lights.
The Balance collection has received recognition for its exceptional design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Jewelry, Eyewear, and Watch Design category in 2019. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The Balance collection stands out for its integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its contribution to a better world.
The Balance collection by Hsinyu Chu is a testament to the designer's creativity, innovation, and attention to detail. These necklaces not only serve as beautiful pieces of jewelry but also as wearable works of art that combine tradition and modernity, symbolism and aesthetics.
