Sushi Yoshi stands out with its dramatic and lighter approach to traditional sushi dining. As customers approach the restaurant, they are greeted by a striking corrugated card sculpture of a Japanese Kokeshi doll, setting the stage for the unique experience that awaits them. The double-height fully glazed entrance showcases the interior, featuring large-scale wall and ceiling features constructed of pale timbers. These modern geometric structures spread out from junctions, creating a sense of unity alongside traditional Japanese screens and lanterns.
What sets Sushi Yoshi apart is its commitment to incorporating new technologies and materials into its design. The restaurant features 3D printed koi ornaments, which serve as unique screens that differentiate areas within the space. Portuguese split-faced granite and smooth Carrara marble are skillfully combined to create elegant serving counters. Interlocking oak screens are strategically placed throughout the restaurant, while laser-cut cork adds a fish scale effect to the walls. The giant Kokeshi doll at the entrance is a testament to the restaurant's creativity, crafted from hot glued corrugated cardboard offcuts and dressed in a paper robe tied with string.
Not only does Sushi Yoshi prioritize aesthetics, but it also pays homage to sustainability and local culture. Recycled oil barrels are repurposed as washroom sinks, serving as a nod to the local economy. The overall restaurant space spans 467 square meters over two floors, with two staircases providing easy access and safe fire escapes. Drainage points are cleverly concealed within columns, mimicking the structure and creating a rhythmic flow throughout the space.
The design of Sushi Yoshi goes beyond aesthetics and functionality. The new concept breaks up the large dining area with dividers and changes in wall and floor treatments, creating intimate rooms that enhance the dining experience. The interactive kitchens and chefs on both floors engage with diners, offering a more immersive culinary journey. The varying table sizes provide flexibility for large groups or couples, all while maintaining focal points of interest and chef experiences.
Throughout the design process, Blenheim Design faced the challenge of catering to the cultural nuances of Saudi Arabian clientele. In a society where segregation of families and singles is common, the designers sought to create unity through lighting, artwork, and sculpture. The resulting space is easily adaptable and accessible to all, regardless of gender or mobility restrictions.
Sushi Yoshi is a testament to the fusion of traditional and modern Japanese culture, infused with a touch of Saudi Arabian artistry and quirkiness. Blenheim Design's innovative use of technology, sustainable materials, and creative design elements has created a trendy, modern, and minimalist environment that appeals to the well-traveled millennial generation and young families in Saudi Arabia.
Blenheim Design Ltd, the creative force behind Sushi Yoshi, has been recognized for their outstanding work. The restaurant was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2019. This prestigious accolade celebrates designs that demonstrate resourcefulness, technical skill, and a commitment to improving quality of life.
