Sanjay Chauhan's Iconic Trophy Design: A Blend of Art and Innovation

Award-Winning Design Transforms Singapore Airlines' Bird Graphic into a 3D Masterpiece

Sanjay Chauhan's design for the 2014 Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix Trophy is a testament to the power of innovation and artistry in design. Drawing inspiration from the Singapore Airlines logo and the elegance of Rolls Royce's 'Spirit of Ecstasy', Chauhan has created a trophy that is as much a work of art as it is a symbol of victory.

The trophy's design is a unique interpretation of the Singapore Airlines' iconic bird graphic, transformed into a 3D sculptural work of art. The three gold stripes on each wing represent power, direction, and speed, while the smooth, clean curves imbue a touch of elegance and beauty, synonymous with modern F1 cars. Seven rings on the black base pay tribute to the longevity of the world’s first F1 Night Race. The 24K gold-plated trophy, milled from solid aircraft-grade aluminum blocks, is then lovingly hand-polished.

Chauhan's design process involved thorough audits of past F1 Trophies, with the aim of creating a stunning and beautiful F1 Trophy. Over 35 sketches of various themes were produced before the final inspiration was drawn from the Singapore Airlines logo. The trophy was meticulously crafted from four solid aircraft-grade aluminum blocks, paying homage to both Singapore Airlines and curvy modern F1 cars.

The trophy weighs just over 5kgs, stands 580mm high, and is 185mm in diameter at its widest point. Since the launch of the 2014 F1 Singapore Airlines Trophy, the base increases in height with the addition of a ring for each subsequent year the race is held. The base references tires of both the Singapore Airlines' planes and F1 cars.

Chauhan's design was not without its challenges. Designing a trophy for the pinnacle of motorsport was a task in itself. After many rounds of sketches, the team homed in on one design and engaged a partner that could bring it to life. Risis, with their know-how and expertise, were able to produce the trophy and make it look beautiful.

The 2014 Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix Trophy is more than just a trophy; it's a great way for the brand to connect with F1 drivers and fans worldwide. The lucky race winner taking the glory of holding the Trophy up high, with the media and audience alike taking mementos of the tremendous event. The trophy was awarded to race winner Lewis Hamilton.

Chauhan's design was recognized with a Golden A' Design Award in 2019, a testament to the marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creation that reflects the designer's prodigy and wisdom. It is a venerated product and bright idea that advances art, science, design, and technology, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with its desirable characteristics.
