Gather Market: A Unique Oriental Supermarket

Creating an Interesting Business Space with Traditional Chinese Elements

For a long time, Chinese supermarket design has been dominated by Western influences, lacking in humanity and a clear theme. However, in the design of "Gather Market," Anne Qin and her team at Onewe Design have set out to create a brand new and interesting business space that stands out from the crowd.

The design of Gather Market incorporates a combination of Eastern and Western cultures, with bamboo imagery used throughout the visual design and decorative elements. The designers have also drawn inspiration from traditional Oriental architecture, incorporating tenon and mortise structural elements into the space design, including the ceilings, shelves, and props.

One of the unique features of Gather Market is the inclusion of a snack area in a low-rise space with a height of only 2 meters. Originally intended as an office area, the design team saw the opportunity to maximize the value of the space and transformed it into a vibrant snack area.

The interaction between the design and the market culture is evident in the ceiling lights and ground patterns, which embody the Chinese belief in the natural development of things. This expression of the designer's understanding of the market's culture adds depth and meaning to the overall design.

The project, which started in April 2017 and finished in November 2018 in Chengdu, faced its fair share of challenges. As an innovative design project, the designers and owners spent over a year refining every detail, from the shape and brightness of the lights to the selection of materials for the ground and walls.

The design of Gather Market pays tribute to traditional culture while embracing the unique creativity of the present era. By combining Eastern and Western influences, Anne Qin and her team have created a space that stands out from the crowd and provides a fresh and interesting experience for shoppers.

Gather Market was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2019. This prestigious award recognizes the outstanding and creatively ingenious design that authenticates experience and resourcefulness. The design exhibits strong technical and creative skills and contributes to quality of life improvements, making the world a better place.
