Molding Space: Innovative Retail Display Design

Reflecting Urban Sophistication through Cubical Modules and Movable Shelves

"Molding Space" explores the possibilities of forms in retail design, drawing inspiration from urban sophistication. With the use of cubical modules and movable shelves, Studio One has created a unique and flexible retail display that reflects the brand's identity and provides a visually captivating experience.

The design of "Molding Space" by Studio One was inspired by the client's brand concepts that focus on urban sophistication. To reflect this ideology, the designer introduced the urban landscape as a design motif. The cubical module system and movable shelving system on pegboard were used to stack the contour of the space, creating visual rhyme and layers. This not only increased the possibilities and flexibilities towards display but also added a unique touch to the overall design.

The space can be transformed into two types: sale-based and concept-based. In the sale-based configuration, the cubes are stacked in a regular pattern, providing maximum display platforms and showcasing product diversities. In the concept-based configuration, the cubes are stacked in a landscape-like or stage-like approach, emphasizing certain products or collections. This flexibility allows the space to adapt to different needs and create engaging displays.

One of the key features of the design is the movable shelves system customized to the size of the products. The shelves on the pegboard can be easily moved or changed to meet different needs. The cubical modules are divided into different sizes and color schemes based on different categories of products and consumer behavior. This attention to detail ensures that the display elements are not only functional but also visually appealing.

The distance between each hole on the pegboard was carefully calculated to accommodate the size of the movable shelves. The designer also implemented a joggling method between the pegboard and shelves, creating a sleek form for the shelving system while maintaining good load-bearing capabilities. Additionally, the existing concrete columns and beams were sanded down to restore the roughness of the urban landscape, creating a contrast between the refined products and their surroundings.

The design of "Molding Space" covers an area of 75 square meters and was completed between March and June 2018 in Taipei, Taiwan. The project posed several challenges, including the need to introduce flexibility in a fashion-related retail space known for rapid changes. The client wanted to break away from traditional fixed display methods and optimize the space to reflect their brand identity. The designer also faced the challenge of creating a monochrome color scheme that conveys a sense of urban sophistication. Various shades of gray and gray-tone materials, such as concrete and tiles, were used to meet these color needs and create visual variations.

"Molding Space" has been recognized for its innovative design and practicality. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2019. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The design of "Molding Space" has successfully integrated industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, providing fulfillment and positive feelings to customers and contributing to a better world.
