NikolaTesla Switch: Revolutionizing the Cooking Experience

Induction Cooktop Meets Extraction System in a Single Unit

Designed by Fabrizio Crisa, the NikolaTesla Switch is an induction cooktop with an integrated extraction system that combines cooking and extraction into a single unit. This innovative design, inspired by the simplicity of an on/off switch and the aerodynamics of aircraft landing flaps, aims to revolutionize the daily cooking experience.

The NikolaTesla Switch stands out for its unique properties. The cooktop surface is realized in a water jet cut ceramic glass, which also serves as one side of the revolving flap. The other side of the flap is covered with a disk in die-casting aluminium iron cast finished in black or polished aluminium in the white version. The central disk of glass and steel, completely flush with the cooktop surface, cleverly conceals the extraction system. The grease filter is made of three layers of metallic mesh, each one of them oriented in a different angle.

Dimensions of the NikolaTesla Switch are 830X515x211. The extraction and induction cooktop by Elica reach high performance levels in terms of fume and odour extraction, five times faster than the rising speed, and is impressively silent. The product is currently in stock.

The design process of the NikolaTesla Switch started in January 2017 in Fabriano and was presented to the public at Salone del Mobile in April 2018. The research behind the design started with a benchmark from Elica to widen the range of induction hobs with the Tesla System. Market research, focus groups, and data analysis were conducted to collect market insights and understand the needs of the high-end segment of kitchen owners. The design process was guided by these insights, with simplicity and elegance as the main objectives.

The NikolaTesla Switch is not just a product but a system that challenges conventional thinking. The real struggle for the NikolaTesla Switch was the technology behind the flap. Although it might seem to be a simple piece, it is indeed the very opposite. Finding the right magnets was a challenge and simplify the assembling it was as well. The last challenge faced was to make the mechanical parts of the flap and the sensors work together in the best way possible.

The NikolaTesla Switch was awarded Platinum in A' Home Appliances Design Award in 2019. The Platinum A' Design Award recognizes world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative designs that showcase unmatched professionalism, genius, and contribute to societal wellbeing. Awarded to the defining aesthetics of an era, they advance the boundaries of art, science, design, and technology, exhibiting transcendent excellence and making the world a better place.
