Vertical Wood: A Unique Residential House Design

Creating a Warm and Aesthetic Living Space

The public space of "Vertical Wood" features a large beam lying across the ceiling, presenting a challenge for the residential design. Renowned designer Wen-Hsiang Chao took on the task of eliminating the volume and pressure of the ceiling while creating a unique and inviting living space.

The spatial planning of "Vertical Wood" focuses on the location and circulation arrangement of each spatial unit. The design incorporates a pale colored tone with a leisurely trend, using mellow wood tones to establish a foundation of quality. Soft furnishings are carefully chosen to create a warm and aesthetically pleasing living space that combines both beauty and spatial ambiance.

Architectural concrete stylish walls are used in the foyer, extending to the living room wall cabinet on the right. This creates a spatial circulation with the gradual wooden television cabinet. Bright colored paintings guide the visual axis through the projection from track lighting, while a slanted high cabinet on the left turns into the kitchen wall, showcasing unique design skills and variations in constructional materials. This interplay between the left and right sides of the public space is a standout feature of the project.

The private space of "Vertical Wood" continues the fresh and natural nature of the public area, achieving distinctive spatial layers through the use of colors. Delicate wooden flooring and a customized dressing room add to the quality and uniqueness of the design. The overall color scheme further enhances the comfortable and serene atmosphere with ample natural lighting.

The project, completed in 2018 in Taiwan, faced various challenges. The wooden cabinet frames the television wall, leaving the center with spacious area, while the light brown leather sofa reflects the main color tone of the public space. The ceiling extends in a slanted direction to integrate with the public space, eliminating the pressure of the structural beam. The combination of the ceiling, floor, and wall creates a three-dimensional space enriched with fun and natural sentiment.

"Vertical Wood" has received recognition for its exceptional design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2019 in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The design is respected for integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, providing fulfillment and positive feelings, and contributing to a better world.

With its unique spatial planning, warm ambiance, and innovative design solutions, "Vertical Wood" stands as a testament to Wen-Hsiang Chao's talent and creativity in the field of residential house design.
