Nanzhao Inn: A Fusion of Tradition and Modernity

Designers Miaoyi Jiang and Dong Wang Create a Unique Cultural Experience

The inspiration behind the Nanzhao Inn comes from the local architectural characteristics of Lijiang. Jiang and Wang have simplified traditional forms to create a space that is both modern and steeped in cultural heritage. The designers have carefully selected and artistically processed local folk customs and cultural supplies to adorn the space, creating a unique atmosphere that is both high-end and deeply rooted in tradition.

What sets the Nanzhao Inn apart is its commitment to authenticity. It is a theme hotel that transforms original folk houses into modern accommodations, allowing tourists to experience a contemporary lifestyle within primitive towns. The design team studied the local Dongba culture and integrated its paper and language into the design, further enhancing the cultural immersion.

The Nanzhao Inn was realized using a combination of traditional and modern materials such as green brick, wood veneer, and texture paint. The use of local stone and logs creates a primitive ecological atmosphere, while the warm texture paint and wall cloth combined with a light range offer a cozy living experience. The design team has also utilized Chinese lines and traditional elements to create a unique, elegant space that reflects the local culture of Lijiang.

The project covers a building area of about 1711 square meters and includes 15 rooms, a hotel lobby, and a balcony barbecue function area. The design team has made efficient use of the space to maximize operational benefits. The choice of flooring and ceiling design further enhances the traditional Chinese feeling of the space, creating a harmonious and culturally rich environment.

The Nanzhao Inn project began in August 2017 and was completed in July 2018. The design team faced several challenges due to the short design cycle and large number of drawings. However, through strict design checks and problem-solving, they were able to achieve a final design that closely matched their initial vision. The project was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2019, a testament to its outstanding design and innovation.
