Swim: A Creative Fusion of Eastern and Western Cultures

Swim stands out from other designs with its innovative fusion of Eastern and Western cultures. While traditional Chinese paper cutting is known for its abstract, two-dimensional patterns, Yiyikwok takes it a step further by adding a touch of realism and three-dimensionality inspired by Western art. The result is a mesmerizing scene that transports the viewer into a dreamlike realm where fish gracefully navigate through a sea of multi-layered paper cuts.

The design process for Swim involved meticulous hand-drawn sketches, followed by the use of Adobe Illustrator to refine lines and colors. Adobe Photoshop was then utilized to perfect the overall composition. To ensure the pattern's delicate colors and shadows were accurately reproduced, the scarf was printed using digital printing technology. Made from 100% traditional Chinese silk, Swim is not only visually stunning but also soft to the touch with a beautiful gloss.

Measuring 1100mm in width and height, Swim offers versatility in how it can be worn. Its flexible nature allows for various folding styles, making it a versatile accessory for any occasion.

Yiyikwok's journey in creating Swim spanned over nine months, from June 2018 to February 2019. The artist's research and exploration of the fusion between Eastern and Western cultures laid the foundation for this exceptional design. By observing and studying the intricate patterns of Chinese paper cuts, as well as the movement and postures of different fish species, Yiyikwok was able to creatively combine these elements into a visually striking composition.

The design and production of Swim presented its own set of challenges. One of the main hurdles was arranging the numerous elements in a cohesive and creative manner within the composition. Additionally, selecting the right printing technology was crucial to ensure that the intricate details of the pattern were preserved.

Swim has been recognized for its outstanding design and creativity, receiving the Bronze A' Design Award in the Textile, Fabric, Textures, Patterns, and Cloth Design category in 2019. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that demonstrate technical and creative excellence, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
