Rong: A Unique Pattern Design by 1983ASIA

Bringing Together the Spirit of Shenzhen and Hong Kong

Rong, a pattern design by 1983ASIA, draws inspiration from the cultural systems of Shenzhen and Hong Kong, combining their spiritual beliefs and city flowers to create a square and continuous image. This design was created for the second Shenzhen-Hong Kong Design Biennial Exhibition, with the aim of expressing the core concept of the two cities' grade and bringing Chinese traditional culture into daily life through modern design aesthetics.

In order to respond to the theme of the exhibition, Interaction Twin Cities, 1983ASIA designed a series of images with an invitation. The goal was to make the Chinese traditional culture of Shenzhen and Hong Kong more accessible by using modern design aesthetics. The result is a pattern that represents the two places through a cross combination of symbols, creating a quadrilateral continuous Yin and Yang pattern. This design not only showcases the interaction between the two cities but also serves as a container for carrying their cultural spirit.

The realization of the Rong pattern involved a combination of traditional and digital techniques. The symbols representing the two cities were initially sketched by hand and then scanned into the computer. Using software such as AI and PS, the designers deconstructed and redesigned the symbols to create a visually appealing pattern that would resonate with a wider audience. The final design was digitally printed, ensuring the accuracy and quality of the pattern.

By incorporating elements of totem culture and Asian design, Rong captures the essence of Shenzhen and Hong Kong. The pattern features motifs such as dragons and rocs, symbolizing power and hope. It serves as a visual representation of the cultural interaction between the two cities, showcasing their unique characteristics and cultural tolerance.

Rong was created in 2016 in Hong Kong, China, and has received recognition for its creativity and ingenuity. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Textile, Fabric, Textures, Patterns, and Cloth Design category in 2017. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity and resourcefulness, incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology. Rong not only contributes to the improvement of quality of life but also showcases the rich cultural heritage of Shenzhen and Hong Kong.

With Rong, 1983ASIA has successfully bridged the gap between tradition and modernity, creating a design that not only pays homage to the cultural systems of Shenzhen and Hong Kong but also resonates with a global audience. Through its unique pattern and thoughtful design, Rong serves as a testament to the power of cultural exchange and the beauty of artistic expression.
