AMAN BOWL: A Unique Bowling Alley Design by Donny Lee

Transforming a Vacant Space into an Internationally Benchmark Bowling Arena

From the moment Penang-based developer Belleview Group approached Donny Lee in 2015, the Aman Bowl project became a turning point for his design practice. The challenge was to transform a vacant commercial space into a state-of-the-art bowling arena that would stand out on an international level.

One of the main challenges faced by the design team was the presence of multiple pillars on the 3rd floor venue, which was located below a parking floor. Additionally, the low ceiling posed a constraint to creating a spacious environment. To overcome these limitations, the team applied creative illusions using mirrors and lighting to visually enlarge the space and height of the venue.

The clever use of mirrors and lighting created an illusion of infinity height and depth, resolving the space and height constraints. The ceiling, walls, and floor were graphically designed to bring momentum to the space, enhancing the overall energetic atmosphere. Reflective lighting was also added to visually diffuse the solid pillars, making the venue more visually-friendly and less claustrophobic.
