The Wonderland: A Unique Residential Space Designed by Chen Shih Hsuan

Creating a Connection Between Function and Aesthetic

The original structure of the house was not in line with the needs of the small family residing in it. To address this, the design team decided to transform the space into two rooms and one functional room, ensuring that the public areas remained spacious. One of the original rooms was repurposed to enlarge the dining space and serve as a storage room as well. This reorganization allows for a more efficient use of space and better caters to the family's requirements.

What sets The Wonderland apart is its focus on the little connections of daily life for the homeowners. The integration of health, leisure, function, quality, and fine art creates an environment that embodies truth, goodness, and beauty. Inspired by William Shakespeare's quote, "There are a thousand hamlets in a thousand people's eyes," the design concept emphasizes the individuality and personal touch that each family member brings to the space.

The realization of The Wonderland involved the use of various technologies and materials. The vestibule, for example, serves multiple functions such as welcoming guests and providing storage. To enhance the visual appeal, the design team incorporated high-pressure laminate with an iron frame style handle for the front door of the shoe cabinet and storage cabinet. Sliding-door style cabinets were also implemented to maximize convenience and flexibility in the limited space.

With an indoor area of approximately 380 square feet, The Wonderland offers a compact yet functional living space. The design team paid meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that every aspect of the project was executed to perfection. From the treatment of materials to the stage-by-stage decoration of the wood flooring, every element was carefully considered to enhance the overall quality and durability of the design.

The challenges faced during the creation of The Wonderland were met with creativity and innovation. The client's desire for a modern style and willingness to explore new functional proposals provided ample room for the design team to showcase their expertise. Unconventional design elements, such as the main wall in the living room, were incorporated to create a sense of spaciousness and visual appeal. The customized wallpaper in the corridor, with its integration of the sliding door and Zen-inspired design, adds a touch of relaxation and comfort to the space.

The Wonderland is a testament to the power of design in transforming living spaces. By prioritizing the unique needs and preferences of the homeowners, Chen Shih Hsuan has created a residential space that seamlessly blends form and function. This project was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2019, recognizing its practicality, innovation, and adherence to professional and industrial standards.
