Commute Carbon: Reducing Carbon Emissions through Intelligent Commuting

A Mobile App Designed by Anyi Sun

With rising concerns about global warming, individuals need to reconsider and readapt their lifestyle choices. To tackle this challenge, the mobile app Commute Carbon was designed to reduce carbon emissions. To do so, the app empowers individuals to understand their commute impact and motivates them to choose more environmentally friendly commute methods.

Transportation is one of the largest sources of carbon pollution, and with the peaking CO2 levels, it is urgent that we rethink how we commute. Commute Carbon, designed by Anyi Sun, is an intelligent mobile app that aims to help solve the global warming problem by encouraging people to reevaluate and reimagine their commute methods.

Commute Carbon stands out from other apps with its unique focus on reducing carbon footprints. By motivating individuals to choose more environmentally friendly commute methods, the app plays a crucial role in preventing global warming. With features like Route Planning, Commute Logging, Smart Analysis, and Reward Redemption, Commute Carbon empowers users to understand and reduce their commute carbon footprint.

The design of the app follows a human-centric design process. Anyi Sun employed methodologies such as user research, journey mapping, persona creation, paper prototyping, and usability testing to ensure a seamless user experience. The app utilizes location technologies empowered by APIs and mobile devices to provide accurate and real-time information.

Users can easily plan their commute by entering their start and end points in the app. Commute Carbon then displays the carbon footprint of each transportation method, allowing users to make informed decisions. Additionally, users can log their commute and review innovatively visualized data to track their carbon footprint. To further incentivize green commutes, the app rewards users with awards, such as discounts for green products, for their carbon offsets.

Commute Carbon was completed in January 2019 in New York City. Extensive research was conducted to gain insights into people's pain points and goals regarding commuting and global warming. User interviews and surveys were conducted, with nearly 50 participants providing valuable feedback. The research showed that people want an easy way to log and view their carbon consumption and be rewarded for their efforts.

The key creative challenge in designing Commute Carbon was to create a user experience that is easy to understand, effortless to use, and fun to interact with. By overcoming this challenge, Anyi Sun has created an app that encourages users to actively engage in reducing their carbon footprint.

Commute Carbon has received recognition for its innovative design and practicality. In 2019, it was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Mobile Technologies, Applications, and Software Design category. This award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. Commute Carbon's clean and fun designs, combined with its impactful functionalities, contribute to a better world by promoting sustainable commuting.
