Abacus: A Multi-Functional Wall-Mount Bookshelves and Coat Hanger

Inspired by Chinese Abacus and Steelyard Balance

Abacus is a unique design created by Wai Ho Cheung that combines the functionality of bookshelves and a coat hanger. The inspiration for this design comes from the Chinese abacus and steelyard balance, while the shape of the coat-hooks is inspired by lighters. With its clean edges and flying metal wires, Abacus stands out as a versatile and visually appealing piece of furniture.

Abacus is not your ordinary bookshelf or coat hanger. It is a multi-functional wall-mount design that adds a touch of elegance to any space. The wood blocks with clean edges give it a sleek and modern look, while the lighter-shaped hooks add a unique element of style. The hooks can move along the wires, allowing for easy customization and flexibility.

One of the standout features of Abacus is its hidden wall fixings, which give it a seamless and clean appearance. The hooks are installed on double-wire rails, ensuring smooth movement without any scratches. The design specifications of Abacus are as follows: Width 870 mm (Extendable) x Depth 220 mm x Height 420 mm.

Abacus is designed to optimize space usage, especially in small properties like 1-bedroom flats and studios. Every inch of space is utilized competently and wisely. The hooks can be concealed behind the blocks, serving as bookends and coat hangers. Users can also hang scarves or other objects in between the rails, further maximizing functionality.

The extendable nature of Abacus allows for easy expansion by installing additional sets. This makes it a versatile solution for different spaces and evolving needs. Whether you need more storage for your books or a place to hang your coats, Abacus can adapt to your requirements.

The Abacus design project started in August 2016 and was completed in September 2016 in Hong Kong. The designer, Wai Ho Cheung, conducted extensive research on urban living and the increasing demand for efficient space usage. As cities become more crowded, residences are shrinking, and innovative designs like Abacus are needed to make the most of limited space.

Abacus has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2019. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and technical excellence. Abacus stands out for its incorporation of best practices in art, science, design, and technology, contributing to improvements in quality of life.

In conclusion, Abacus is a remarkable design that combines the functionality of bookshelves and a coat hanger in a visually appealing and space-efficient manner. Inspired by the Chinese abacus and steelyard balance, this design stands out with its clean edges, flying double-wire rails, and movable hooks. Whether you need storage for your books or a place to hang your coats, Abacus offers a stylish and versatile solution.
