Modulight: Bringing Natural Light to Dark Basements

An Innovative Sunlight Reflector Designed by MirKazem KhalifehZadeh

Innovation is creativity with a job to do. - John Emmerling

Warm, natural light is a comfort we often take for granted in our living spaces. However, many basements suffer from a lack of access to sunlight due to window wells, improper window placement, or unfavorable angles. Recognizing this age-old issue, designer MirKazem KhalifehZadeh embarked on a creative journey to bring more natural light into dark basement living spaces. The result is Modulight, a revolutionary sunlight reflector that allows homeowners to customize their own solution.

The strength of Modulight lies in its simple building block design. With a set of configurable pieces, users can easily create a reflector tailored to the size, depth, and orientation of their basement windows. The intuitive push-fit assembly requires no tools or adhesive, making it accessible to everyone. Whether it's a small window or a large one, Modulight can be customized to fit any space.

The design process for Modulight involved utilizing 3D imaging software to create a full reflector, which was then broken down into ten types of pieces. These prototype pieces were 3D printed, and the final reflector is made from durable and easy-to-manufacture standard polymers (ABS). The reflecting face is achieved through chrome plating, ensuring optimal light reflection from any angle.

Modulight's technical specifications include ten different parts, each with unique dimensions. From Part #01 measuring 3.1"x4.6"x1.5" to Part #10 at 1.5"x1.8"x7.0", these pieces can be combined to create reflectors of various sizes.

Installation of Modulight is a breeze. Once the reflector is assembled, it can be easily moved into place, requiring no complex installation process. The lightweight and sturdy design, made from chromed ABS polymer, ensures a durable and reliable solution for any basement.

The Modulight project began in Montreal, Canada, with initial concepts discussed in May 2018. After several iterations and the assembly of the first prototype in February 2019, Modulight reflectors are set to be available to the general public before the end of 2019.

Extensive research was conducted to ensure Modulight's uniqueness and effectiveness. Existing solutions, such as traditional mirrors or flexible mirrors, were found to be limited in their ability to reflect light from any angle. Modulight fills this gap by offering a scalable approach that can reflect light from any direction, providing a unique and innovative solution.

The design process for Modulight was not without its challenges. The team had to overcome the complexity of creating a modular system that could accommodate various angles and corner chamfers while using a minimal number of part types. Additionally, achieving optimal light reflection from any angle without the use of moving parts required careful engineering and design considerations.

Modulight's intuitive and accessible design makes it a game-changer for basement living spaces. With its easy customization and simple installation process, it offers a practical solution for bringing natural light into previously dark areas. The Modulight sunlight reflector is set to revolutionize basement design and enhance the overall living experience.

Modulight has already received recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2019 in the Idea and Conceptual Design category. This prestigious award is given to designs that meet professional and industrial requirements, integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics. Modulight's practicality, innovation, and positive impact on the world have earned it this esteemed accolade.
