Haze Stool: Blurring Boundaries with Gradient Glass

A Multifunctional Stool by Gaku Takasu

Many designs leave a clear distinction between the transparent and the reflective, but with the Haze Stool, designer Gaku Takasu used gradation to blur this distinction and create something that is both novel and inspiring.

The Haze Stool is a unique and captivating piece of furniture that transitions from clear to mirrored glass. The gradient begins halfway up the stool, blurring the boundary between the inside and outside and leaving the viewer curiously mystified. This beautiful and enthralling product is sure to leave a lasting impression.

The materials used in the Haze Stool are clear glass and a special technical paint called "Electroless plating paint." Unlike the usual method for creating mirrors, the technique of Electroless plating paint generates silver in a chemical reaction. By controlling the time of the chemical reaction, the clear glass is transformed into mirrored glass, creating the stunning gradient effect.

Measuring at 280mm x 280mm x 450mm and made of 10mm clear glass, the Haze Stool is a versatile piece that can be used as a stool, side table, or unique objet. Its marvelous gradation blurs the boundary between the inside and outside, providing a mystifying experience for the viewer.

The Haze Stool project started in 2017 in Tokyo and was exhibited in Designart Tokyo in the same year. The design team conducted extensive research to develop a new technology to realize the transparent to mirrored gradation. While the technologies for creating such gradations remain imperfect, the team believes that this work has the potential to transform the design world in a major way.

The Haze Stool has been awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2019. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The Haze Stool is respected for integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, providing fulfillment and positive feelings, and contributing to a better world.

With its simple cubic design and mesmerizing gradient glass, the Haze Stool is not only a functional piece of furniture but also a work of art. It showcases the possibilities of using gradation on glass and serves as an innovative new idea with potential for construction-scale design.
