Carimbo: A Signature Stamp for the Offline World

A Unique Design by Igor Pinheiro

The stamp is a signature. That's the sentence that best summarizes this project. At first, the intention was to find a way of approaching the offline world. Something like a business card, only classier, cheaper, and environmentally friendly. So a stamp (carimbo) was the choice. A stamp to identify its owner and his work and take it everywhere. A signature.

A stamp is a powerful tool that can leave a lasting impression. Igor Pinheiro, a talented designer, recognized the potential of a stamp as a unique way to connect with the offline world. His creation, Carimbo, is not just any stamp; it is a personalized signature that represents the owner and their work.

Carimbo stands out with its distinctive design. The inner part of the stamp represents Igor's confusing and beautiful creative process, while the round frame wraps it up in fluidity and purpose. These two elements combine to create a texture that allows the ink to flow through, providing the perfect support for his personal brand. The contact information is elegantly written in Minion Pro, adding a touch of sophistication.

Measuring 38.1 x 38.1 mm (1.5 x 1.5 in), Carimbo is designed to fit anywhere, from Post-its to envelopes, while maintaining appropriate readability. Its circular shape not only attracts the eye but also maximizes the use of space. The design is meticulously crafted to ensure legibility and visual impact.

Creating Carimbo was not without its challenges. One of the most significant obstacles was whether such an intricate design could be translated into a functional stamp. The question of feasibility and the risk of bleed-prone designs had to be addressed. Additionally, finding a reliable supplier capable of delivering the stamp was crucial. However, these challenges were overcome, and Carimbo became a reality.

The realization of Carimbo involved a combination of digital tools and traditional craftsmanship. Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Bridge were used for the initial design, while Adobe Photoshop and a Nikon D3200 camera were employed for the presentation construction. The final stamp was produced by a skilled rubber-stamp maker, ensuring the highest quality.

Carimbo was born out of careful research and observation of stamping techniques and visual language. Igor studied the characteristics and limitations of stamps, discovering how some designs can aid in overcoming these limitations. The result is a unique combination of deliberate features and chance, creating a textured design that is both intentional and unpredictable.

The project began in August 2014 in Caruaru, with several months dedicated to sketching, research, and development. The final design was refined, tested, and the corresponding rubber stamp was ordered. In March 2015, Carimbo was unveiled to the world, showcasing Igor's creativity and innovation.

Carimbo has garnered recognition and acclaim for its exceptional design. In 2020, it was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration, and Visual Communication Design category. This prestigious award recognizes designs that are well-designed, practical, and innovative, meeting professional and industrial requirements. Carimbo's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contribute to a better world.

Carimbo is not just a stamp; it is a work of art that represents Igor Pinheiro's creative vision and his desire to connect with the offline world. With its unique design and personalized touch, Carimbo is a signature that leaves a lasting impression.
