Kairos Time: Transformative Amber Earrings with Makie Art

A Symbolic and Environmentally Friendly Jewelry Design

Kairos Time is the moment of transformation. When God’s time ticks away, it is the miracle moment for all creatures to be transformed into whole new beings and it circulates eternally in the universe. This pair of amber earrings was designed with Makie, a Japanese lacquer sprinkled with gold powder. Each piece shows God’s time for a butterfly, the moment of the butterfly’s emergence and the moment of transformation to spirit. Diamonds express the eternal cosmos blinking.

Renowned designer Chiaki Miyauchi has created a truly unique and captivating jewelry design with Kairos Time. These amber earrings, adorned with Makie art, are a testament to the designer's creativity and attention to detail. The combination of natural materials and traditional Japanese craftsmanship results in a piece that is not only visually stunning but also environmentally friendly.

Amber, known for its fossilized coniferous resin origins, and Japanese lacquer, derived from tree sap, come together harmoniously in this design. The botanical connection between these materials serves as a symbolic representation of the importance of preserving and respecting nature. Kairos Time is a true treasure that embodies transformation and harmony.

The Makie technique, a traditional Japanese lacquer crafting technique, is used to decorate the earrings. This technique involves attaching gold, silver, and other colored powders to the lacquer, creating intricate and beautiful patterns. Developed in Japan during the 8th to 12th centuries, Makie objects were initially designed as household items for court nobles. Over time, they became a symbol of power and prestige for royal families and military leaders.

The technical specifications of Kairos Time are as follows: the earrings measure 20mm in width, 13mm in depth, and 55mm in height. They are made of 18kt white gold, natural Baltic amber, and feature a 0.11ct diamond. The Makie component incorporates 24kt gold powder, mother of pearl, and Japanese lacquer. The design showcases both the front and back of the amber, creating a unified image with the Makie technique.

Not only is Kairos Time a visually striking piece, but it is also designed with wearability and simplicity in mind. The earrings are lightweight and comfortable, making them suitable for everyday wear. When sunlight hits the amber and diamond, the earrings come to life, enhancing their beauty and leaving a lasting impression.

The Tacara jewelry collection, which includes Kairos Time, originated and developed in Kyoto, Japan, starting in September 2017. These exquisite earrings have been exhibited at prestigious galleries such as Ame Gallery in Hong Kong and Imura Art Gem in Kyoto, Japan.

Chiaki Miyauchi's research on the durability of amber with Makie objects has ensured that Kairos Time is not only visually stunning but also built to last. Through extensive testing and collaboration with craftsmen, the designer has discovered the best techniques and materials to create a standard jewelry object. Natural lacquer has proven to be the most durable option for amber, while acrylic urethane coating enhances both durability and aesthetics for Makie jewelry.

Creating Kairos Time presented its fair share of challenges. Each Makie craftsman has their own unique techniques and materials, requiring precise communication and coordination to maintain the desired designs. Additionally, working with amber posed a challenge due to its hardness on the Mohs scale. The expertise of goldsmiths was necessary to incorporate gems and gold into the design.

Chiaki Miyauchi's Kairos Time earrings have garnered recognition in the design world. The design was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Jewelry, Eyewear, and Watch Design category in 2019. This prestigious award recognizes well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. Kairos Time stands out for its integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its contribution to a better world.

Kairos Time is a testament to Chiaki Miyauchi's artistic vision and dedication to creating unique and environmentally friendly jewelry. With its transformative design and harmonious blend of natural materials and traditional craftsmanship, these earrings are a true work of art.
