Stuttering is a speech disorder characterized by the repetition of syllables, prolongation of words, or extended pauses. It affects as many as 1 in 100 adults worldwide, or approximately 70 million people. Fukuoka, who still battles with stuttering, recognized the need for greater awareness and understanding of this condition.
STACHA, short for "Stuttering Experience Device," is designed to provide wearers with a realistic sensation of stuttering. By sending a faint current of electricity through the larynx, the device constricts the muscles in the throat, making it difficult to properly pronounce words. This unique feature allows individuals without the disorder to empathize and gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by those who stutter.
The development of STACHA involved a multidisciplinary team, including UX designers, hardware engineers, product designers, web developers, and motion graphic designers. The collaboration resulted in a wearable collar device that accurately simulates the symptoms of stuttering.
One of the primary goals of STACHA is to raise awareness about stuttering and reduce instances of childhood bullying. By experiencing the symptoms of stuttering, individuals can develop empathy and understanding, leading to a more inclusive society. Additionally, STACHA aims to educate family members and colleagues, fostering a supportive environment for individuals who stutter.
The journey to create STACHA spanned several months and involved extensive research and collaboration with self-help groups, stuttering circles, and medical researchers. The device was eventually showcased at SXSW in 2017, gaining recognition for its innovative approach to raising awareness about stuttering.
With its unique properties and the use of technology such as Arduino, C++, Eagle, Rhino, Keyshot, Fusion 360, Illustrator, Photoshop, HTML, CSS, and Javascript, STACHA represents a significant step forward in promoting understanding and empathy for individuals who stutter. By providing a tangible experience of the challenges faced by those with the disorder, STACHA aims to create a more inclusive society where stuttering is better understood and accepted.
As Yuka Fukuoka continues her journey to raise awareness about stuttering, STACHA stands as a testament to the power of design and technology in fostering empathy and understanding. Through this innovative device, individuals can gain a deeper appreciation for the struggles faced by those who stutter, ultimately leading to a more compassionate and inclusive world.
