An Innovative Design to Raise Awareness of Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer's disease, a progressive brain disease, affects millions of people worldwide. Designer Jiayi Li found inspiration in the story of an elderly couple from Taiwan, who despite losing their memories due to illness, continue to share a deep and unwavering love for each other.

In an effort to raise awareness of Alzheimer's disease, Li created Command Z, a unique book that visualizes the memory loss process experienced by patients. The design also incorporates the touching love story of the couple, creating a powerful narrative that resonates with readers.

Command Z stands out from other designs with its innovative approach. The book utilizes various techniques, including variable temperature inks, blank pen marks, polaroid photos, and even fire, to convey the journey of memory loss.

Interacting with the book is an integral part of the experience. The temperature-sensitive ink reacts to touch, revealing hidden text when readers place their hands on the pages. Additionally, the blank pen marks require users to overlap two blank papers and use a pencil to reveal the hidden handwriting on the lower sheet.

The book is divided into three stages, mirroring the different stages of Alzheimer's disease. Each stage employs different design approaches to evoke emotions and convey the vulnerability and challenges faced by patients. For example, tracing paper is used in the early stage to symbolize fragility, while temperature-sensitive ink is combined with text in the mid-stage to represent the fading memories.

Command Z has received recognition for its exceptional design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Social Design Award in 2023, a prestigious accolade that celebrates designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life. This recognition highlights the technical and creative skills employed in the creation of Command Z, making it an outstanding contribution to the field of design.
