Backbone Branding's Innovative Design Inspired by Nature

Backbone Branding's Yan Natural Juice packaging design is a revolutionary concept that marries form and function, drawing inspiration from the simple act of biting into an apple. This award-winning design has not only redefined packaging aesthetics but also enhanced user experience and sustainability.

The inspiration for the design came from observing how people consume fruits, specifically apples. The designers noticed that the most appealing fruits are bitten into, and the decision to take a second bite depends on the taste. This led to the exploration of the bitten apple's shape and pattern, resulting in a bottle design that mimics the form of an apple bitten from both sides. The bitten and wholesome parts of the apple complement each other, creating a visual balance akin to Yin and Yang.

The Yan Natural Juice brand is built around the concept of "Organic in Everything". This philosophy is reflected in the bottle design, which is based on biomimicry principles. The bottle's shape, resembling a row of bitten apples, serves as a unique visual feature. Moreover, this arrangement allows for significant space-saving on shelves and during transportation, demonstrating the design's practicality.

Backbone Branding has also incorporated innovative features to enhance the user experience. A special furrow shape solution for the bottle's upper part ensures a comfortable grip, while an anti-slip surface on both sides prevents the bottle from slipping. These features, combined with the bottle's unique shape, have made it popular among consumers, who describe the Yan juice bottle as "the convenient bottle".

The bottle is made of recyclable glass, emphasizing the brand's commitment to eco-consciousness and premium quality. The label, made of recyclable paper, features a stylised calligraphic inscription of the brand name Yan, resembling a thin grass reed, further reinforcing the connection to nature.

Despite the challenges faced during the manufacturing process, such as the uneven curves of the bottle and the risk of breakage during sterilisation, the design team managed to turn these into advantages. By reducing the sterilisation temperature, they not only prevented breakage but also ensured a fresher and tastier juice, enhancing the overall product quality.

The Yan Natural Juice bottle design, with its unique form, practical features, and eco-friendly materials, has earned Backbone Branding the prestigious Platinum A' Packaging Design Award in 2020. This recognition underscores the design's exceptional innovation and contribution to societal wellbeing, truly setting a new standard in packaging design.
