The New LumiFold TB: A Portable Resin 3D Printer

An Innovative Solution for Compact and Transportable 3D Printing

The New LumiFold TB is a groundbreaking 3D printer designed by Davide Marin to be compact, portable, and highly efficient. With its unique folding design and use of a tablet as a light source, this printer offers a new level of convenience and versatility in the world of 3D printing.

The inspiration for the New LumiFold TB comes from the desire to create a compact and portable 3D printer that utilizes the latest advancements in 3D printing technology. The name "LumiFold" originates from the use of light-curing resins in the printing process, with the "TB" representing the tablet screen light used in this particular model. The "Fold" in the name refers to the printer's ability to fold on itself, making it extra compact and easy to transport. This design is an evolution of the previous Lumifold project, which introduced the concept of portability in stereolithography Additive Manufacturing back in 2013.

What sets the New LumiFold TB apart from other 3D printers is its innovative use of an iPad Tablet as the light source. With a resolution on the xy axis of 78 microns, this printer delivers exceptional precision and detail. The tablet is inserted under the resin vat, beneath a Fep film, and an app processes the 3D file. Once the file is ready, the user simply clicks start, and the 3D printer, connected via Bluetooth to the iPad, moves up each time a layer is cured by the light emitted from the tablet screen.

The New LumiFold TB is constructed using CNC machined aluminum for most of its parts, ensuring durability and stability. The top part of the printer is made from a block of acrylic that has been milled, polished, and dyed with a UV-blocking pigment. This combination of materials creates a sleek and modern design that is both lightweight and robust.

With dimensions of 180 x 280 x 80 mm when closed and a maximum height of 180 mm when fully open, the New LumiFold TB offers a 3D printing volume of approximately 100 x 100 x 100 mm. This compact size makes it ideal for on-the-go printing and allows users to take their creativity wherever they need it.

Operating the New LumiFold TB is simple and user-friendly. The user opens a 3D file on the tablet using the dedicated app, which slices and processes the file. Once the file is ready, the screen switches to black, indicating that it is time to insert the tablet under the resin vat. With a press of the start button, the 3D printer begins its precise layer-by-layer printing process, moving up each time a layer is cured by the light emitted from the tablet screen. After the printing is complete, the user can remove the printed part, clean it with detergent, and post-process it with sunlight or an external UV lamp.

The development of the New LumiFold TB was a result of extensive research and engineering. The challenge was to create a precise mechanical scissor system that would allow for ultra-compact design without compromising the quality of the prints. Through multiple iterations and the incorporation of small components, the team was able to achieve a lifting system that can print with a resolution of up to 25 microns on the Z axis.

The New LumiFold TB opens up new possibilities for various industries and individuals. Doctors in developing countries or emergency areas can now 3D print on the go, bringing their expertise wherever it is needed. Teachers can create 3D models during lessons, enhancing the learning experience for their students. Designers can collaborate with clients and create prototypes on the spot, providing live presentations and immediate feedback. The possibilities are endless.

The New LumiFold TB has been recognized for its innovation and excellence in design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Manufacturing and Processing Machinery Design category in 2020. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity, technical skills, and contributions to improving the quality of life.

With its compact size, portable design, and cutting-edge technology, the New LumiFold TB is revolutionizing the world of 3D printing. It offers a convenient and efficient solution for those seeking high-quality prints on the go, making it a game-changer in the field of additive manufacturing.
