The design inspiration for the installations at the fair was drawn from the official houseware industry trend report. This led to the selection of bold colours, finishes, and lit outline frameworks to produce a language of abstract interior settings. The result was a visually stunning welcome installation at the venue's entrance foyer, an entrance treatment for the exhibition hall entry, and a separate trend forecast display showcasing four future predictions from the industry's research report.
What set this design apart was its unique properties. The Hong Kong Trade Development Council utilized three areas inside the Convention and Exhibition Centre building to uplift the event's image. The welcome installation, hall entry treatment, and trend display area were all designed with a consistent aesthetic, creating a subliminal connection between all three spaces and elevating the aesthetics of the event.
The realization of this design was a feat of technology and innovation. The welcome installation, a 30m2 x 5m high structure, was made using a large LED 3mm pitch screen, reusable aluminium structural system, LED stripe lights, black sticker finish, acrylic panels, digital print, vinyl graphics, and biodegradable carpet. The same materials were used for the hall entry treatment and trend display area, all of which were tested offsite for quicker reassembly and lit during the three days onsite timeline.
The design project, which took three months from initial briefing to onsite completion, was located at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai, Hong Kong. The event ran for three days, from the 20th to the 23rd of April 2019. The design research began with analysing the trend forecasts for the houseware industry, leading to the creation of abstract interior settings under the Living Art concept for the welcome installation and entrance treatment.
Despite the challenges of a three-day onsite production and the need for a design concept that would reflect the industry trend and stimulate the visitors, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council successfully created a visually stunning and innovative design. The design was awarded Silver in A' Event and Happening Design Award in 2020, a testament to its outstanding expertise and innovation.
In conclusion, the Hong Kong Houseware Fair 2019 was a remarkable blend of art, design, and technology. The event showcased the power of innovation and the potential of design to elevate an event's image and engage visitors. The award-winning design by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council is a testament to the power of creativity, innovation, and meticulous planning.
