Mercurio: The Innovative Urban Safety Equipment

Integrating Safety and Style for Everyday City Moves

Mercurio, designed by Alberto Piovesan, revolutionizes the concept of urban safety equipment. Combining fashion and functionality, this innovative design is set to change the way we protect ourselves in the city.

Living in a bustling metropolis comes with its fair share of challenges, especially when it comes to safety. Alberto Piovesan, a passionate cyclist and urban dweller, recognized the need for a safety solution that not only provided protection but also reflected the evolving trends of urban living.

Mercurio stands out from existing products on the market by reimagining the traditional airbag. No longer confined to special jackets or goggles, the airbag is seamlessly integrated into a stylish garment. This simplification process makes Mercurio lightweight, versatile, and economical.

The design of Mercurio is a result of extensive research and collaboration. The polyurethane membrane and nylon fabric layers are meticulously matched using a high-temperature press method, creating an airtight bag. The product is equipped with a mechanical inflator activated by sensors, powered by rechargeable batteries.

One of the standout features of Mercurio is its flexibility. The product can be easily bent and stored in its packaging, which is designed to be reused even after purchase. Made from recycled fabric, this small case serves as a versatile accessory to carry everyday items.

Wearing Mercurio is effortless, as it can be worn over everyday clothes like a common accessory. The design seamlessly integrates with any outfit, thanks to customizable matching layers. The airbag inflates only when necessary, providing optimal ergonomics during daily activities and maximum protection when needed.

The development of Mercurio took place across various locations in Italy, including Milan, Vicenza, and Venice. The project spanned over seven to eight months and involved extensive research, including the analysis of local hospital statistics on urban accidents and collaboration with safety experts at Dainese.

Alberto Piovesan faced numerous challenges during the design process, particularly in creating a soft folding material that instantly becomes rigid when compressed with air. However, his dedication to creating a product that is safe, functional, and comfortable led to the successful realization of Mercurio.

Mercurio has garnered recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Safety Clothing and Personal Protective Equipment category in 2020. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life.

With Mercurio, Alberto Piovesan has not only created a groundbreaking urban safety equipment but also redefined the way we approach safety in our daily lives. By seamlessly integrating style and functionality, Mercurio sets a new standard for urban safety.
