Iris: A Revolution in Lighting by Max Kampa

Winner of the Silver A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2020

Max Kampa's Iris, a table lamp with indirect lighting, is more than a luminous sculpture. It's a product that combines minimalist design with innovative functionality, offering users a unique interaction with light.

Max Kampa, a renowned designer, was inspired to create a product that goes beyond the traditional concept of a lamp. Iris is not just about providing light; it's about controlling it. The lamp's unique properties include a diaphragm system that allows users to manually adjust the intensity and direction of the light beam. This feature sets Iris apart from other lighting products in the market.

The design process of Iris involved a series of tests and models until the final design was achieved. The lamp is made from a combination of materials, including carbon steel, stainless steel, ABS plastic, and acrylic. These materials are shaped using laser cutting, lathe, and 3D printing processes. The dome, made of ABS plastic, goes through a manual finishing process after 3D printing.

Iris is a compact table lamp, measuring 143mm in width, 143mm in depth, and 250mm in height. Despite its small size, the lamp offers a unique user experience. The dome undocking system reveals aesthetically appealing details and facilitates easy lamp replacement.

The design of Iris started in March 2019 in Curitiba, Brazil, and was completed in July 2019. The research behind the design involved studying forms of interaction between user and product that were little explored in lighting projects. The result is a simple yet innovative product that provides a unique user experience.

One of the challenges faced during the design process was the high production cost of each piece due to the use of 3D printing. However, Max Kampa envisions that in the future, the product could be produced through the injection process, which would decrease the final cost for the end consumer.

Iris is a testament to Max Kampa's innovative design approach. It's a product that not only fulfills its technical role of lighting control but also creates an engaging user experience. The design was recognized with the Silver A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2020, a testament to its outstanding design and innovation.
