Kendall International: A Village-Inspired Preschool Design

Transforming the Traditional Podium Kindergarten in Hong Kong

Hong Kong's vertical cityscape and traditional box-like classrooms have inspired Cocoon Architecture Ltd. to create a unique preschool design that challenges the norm and fosters a sense of community.

Inspired by the Reggio teaching philosophy, Kendall International, designed by Cocoon Architecture Ltd., aims to redefine the concept of a traditional podium kindergarten. By incorporating the scales of a city and a village, rooms and a podium, and teachers and kids, this innovative design creates a vibrant and engaging learning environment.

One of the standout features of Kendall International is the creation of a village-like atmosphere within the bustling city. Instead of traditional enclosed classrooms, the design clusters half-height village houses around a Central Plaza, all behind full transparent glass partitions. This unique layout encourages children to explore and interact with their surroundings, fostering a sense of belonging and community.

The scale of rooms versus the scale of the podium is another aspect that sets Kendall International apart. With the existing high headroom, the Central Plaza becomes an outdoor-like space with different levels for children to explore, including birdhouses, climbing walls, and nets. This design element not only adds an element of fun and adventure but also allows children to experience the kindergarten from various angles.

Recognizing that children have different ergonomic requirements, Kendall International has been carefully crafted to enhance their sense of belonging. The suitably designed space takes into account the unique needs of children, creating an environment that supports their development and encourages active learning.

When it comes to the materials used in the design, simplicity and natural elements take center stage. The use of predominantly white and wooden colors creates a neutral backdrop, allowing the vibrant and colorful presence of the children to shine. By emphasizing the kids' existence rather than celebrating the architectural space, Kendall International creates an environment that truly puts children at the forefront.

The transformation of the traditional podium kindergarten in Hong Kong's Cheung Sha Wan district presented its fair share of challenges. However, Cocoon Architecture Ltd. successfully overcame these obstacles by creating a design that not only stands out but also integrates seamlessly into the local community. By reimagining the concept of a kindergarten and creating a village within a city, Kendall International has become a community hub that fosters learning, creativity, and social interaction.

Kendall International, designed by Cocoon Architecture Ltd., has been recognized for its innovation and practicality, receiving the Iron A' Design Award in 2020. This prestigious award celebrates designs that meet professional and industrial requirements while providing fulfillment and positive experiences. Kendall International truly represents a design that contributes to a better world.
