Lotus Resort of Jiuhua Mountain: A Harmonious Blend of Design and Culture

Kevin Hu's Award-Winning Design Fuses Modern Techniques with Traditional Elements

The Lotus Zen tourism town, where the resort is situated, is steeped in history and Tibetan culture. The resort, designed as a Zen house, serves multiple functions, from heart-building and self-cultivation to meetings and learning. It also doubles as a rest and living space for visitors seeking a unique experience. The resort stands out for its strategic location on the south side of the Dayuan Cultural Park and its integration of various elements from the surrounding natural landscape.

One of the unique features of the resort is its design realization technology. The building's exterior is surrounded by a layer of water, creating a serene atmosphere. The interior functional spaces are distributed around a lotus pond, providing a buffer zone and viewing distance among pedestrians. The architecture incorporates local materials like brick, tile, wood, and stone, blending seamlessly with the courtyard corridor in an undulating form that mirrors the general extension direction of the mountains.

Each area of the resort is imbued with Chinese traditions and local characteristics. The entrance reception hall, for instance, features a unique bamboo-shaped lighting installation created by a Taiwanese artist. This space is used for various public activities related to Buddhism, such as lectures, Zen meditation, tea, or flower ceremonies. The guest room area is designed according to different themes from local Hui culture and Buddhist thoughts, integrating seamlessly into the Jiuhua Mountain and the international tourism and culture demonstration zone of southern Anhui province.

Despite the challenges of fusing Jiuhua's local cultural history with contemporary space design, the project successfully highlights the core of tourism and leisure resort functions. It creates a harmonious blend of people and space, space and architecture, and architecture and nature, resulting in a traditional yet modern building—a landscape of mountains and rivers with a great oriental connotation.
