Mehdi Moazzen's Homa is not just a piece of jewelry, but a testament to the designer's creativity and innovation. The name 'Homa' is derived from two Avestan words, 'Hu', meaning 'The Creator', and 'Maya', meaning 'the Prime Material of Everything'. This gives Homa the meaning 'the Creator of the Universe'. In Persian literature, Homa is often depicted as the Bird of Bliss and Felicity, a symbol of beauty and grace.
The unique feature of Homa is its dual functionality. It can be worn as a ring or transformed into a necklace, giving the wearer the option to choose its function. This interaction between the user and the piece generates a feeling of connection and engagement. The inner ring is elastic, allowing it to be adjusted based on the size of the user’s finger. A rail mechanism, inspired by train wheels, is used to convert the ring into a necklace. A simple lock is utilized to fix the piece in place.
Homa is crafted from 18K gold and adorned with synthetic and atomic blue ruby. Its dimensions are 33 mm x 36 mm x 33 mm and it weighs 21.780 grams. The design process began in July 2019 in Sari and was completed in September 2019. The physical creation of Homa took six hours.
Designing a practical dual-purpose artwork posed a challenge to Moazzen. The most difficult part was devising a mechanism to convert the ring into a necklace. The solution was a rail mechanism, inspired by train wheels. Making the changeable and moveable part of the ring by hand, without the use of special machinery, was another challenge that was successfully overcome.
The Homa ring is a reflection of Moazzen's innovative approach to jewelry design. It is a practical piece of artwork that offers its user the option of choosing its function. The interaction between the creator and the user is a key element of this design. The Homa ring is not just a piece of jewelry, but a symbol of beauty, grace, and innovation. Its design and functionality have earned it the Silver A' Jewelry, Eyewear and Watch Design Award in 2020, a testament to its outstanding design and innovation.
