Mai 12 Collection: A Modern Twist on Thai Architecture

Bringing Thai architectural design to the world of jewelry

The Mai 12 Collection, designed by Sontaya Pansupa, is a stunning showcase of the beauty and intricacy of Thai architecture. Inspired by the twelve indented corners found in traditional Thai architecture, this collection reimagines these architectural elements as delicate and contemporary silver jewelry.

The Mai 12 Collection draws inspiration from the unique design of Thai architecture, specifically the twelve indented corners, known as "Mai 12" in Thai. These corners are a defining feature of Thai architecture, seen in stupas, building columns, and the tiered spires of the prasat architectural form. Sontaya Pansupa has taken this architectural design and transformed it into a collection of modern jewelry.

What sets the Mai 12 Collection apart is the incorporation of the Grajang pattern, a traditional Thai pattern, which adds a touch of elegance and sophistication to the pieces. The Grajang pattern is simplified and adapted to create a more contemporary design that appeals to a wider audience. This fusion of traditional Thai art and modern jewelry trends results in a collection that is both unique and universally appealing.

The realization of the Mai 12 Collection is made possible through the use of Cad/Cam technology. This advanced production technique allows for precise and intricate designs to be translated into stunning pieces of jewelry. The bangle, measuring 7cm x 7cm x 5cm, and the ring, measuring 2cm x 2cm x 2cm, showcase the meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail that goes into each piece.

Designing and manufacturing the Mai 12 Collection presented its fair share of challenges. The design process involved transforming the geometric shapes of Thai architecture into delicate and ornamental jewelry pieces while maintaining the essence of contemporary Thai art. Additionally, the production of the bangle required careful consideration to ensure it could be easily worn while still retaining the distinct shape of the twelve indented corners.

The Mai 12 Collection is the latest addition to the Grajang brand. It is a testament to the brand's commitment to showcasing the beauty and artistry of Thai culture through innovative design. This collection not only pays homage to traditional Thai architecture but also brings it into the modern world, allowing a wider audience to appreciate the aesthetics of Thai arts in a fresh and novel way.

Sontaya Pansupa, the designer behind the Mai 12 Collection, has received recognition for this exceptional design. The collection was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Jewelry, Eyewear, and Watch Design category in 2021. This prestigious award recognizes designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and technical skill, contributing to improvements in quality of life.

The Mai 12 Collection is a true masterpiece that seamlessly blends the worlds of architecture and jewelry. It serves as a reminder of the rich cultural heritage of Thailand and the endless possibilities for innovation and creativity in design.
